Need some tech advice

roddiesho

@alan279 Ouch! That is a heck of a lot. If I didn't live 25 minutes from Jericoacoara in my own personal paradise I might be jealous but that is still a heck of a lot of money. Is there Happiness on a smaller budget (if Logitech had not sent me a xxxx keyboard a question mark would have been there)

Try the keys at the lower right of your keyboard with and without the shift key. The question mark may be hiding from you. Maybe Logitech support could help you find it? And there may be software to remap the keyboard. Let me know if you need further help.

roddiesho

@alan279 Ok!

roddiesho

@alan279 This is a bad keyboard that took me several weeks to get with additional import fees etc. from Amazon.Com USA. that tripled the price. I am not the fastest, but I am very skilled at typing. This is based on hitting the keys where they should be. I get ~ ^^ using the keys for where quotes should be based on the markings on the key.   : is what I get for a question mark.  The keys are just mislabeled or in the wrong place and I have no options. My village is so small we do not even have traffic lights or stop signs. When I get something, it has to work because it is almost impossible to send it back. I have been putting off calling them, but I will reach out to Amazon. Com on Monday.

Talk to you on Monday.

02/01/25 @roddiesho.   Original post deleted.  Never mind -- sounds like @alan279 is on it.

roddiesho

@alan279    Please Do.  I seem to have been out of the room for the last few posts. Have no idea what has been deleted or what the conflict is about. As Bobby McFerrin would say "Don't Worry Be Happy"

Send me photos of your keyboard, front and back, via private message, along with any other product info.

No conflict, at least WRT your keyboard -- I just deleted my post to keep from repeating what I thought was going to be Alan's advice.  What I was going to say was that maybe your keyboard is ok, but your computer is expecting a different one.  If you're running Win 10 or 11, hold down the Windows key and press the Space Bar.  The selections for keyboards will appear in the lower right.  If "ENG English (United States)" isn't highlighted, hit the Space Bar while holding down the Windows key until it is and see if that solves your problem.

@abthree

Windows? You know why they call it Windows?

Cause you want to find a window and throw the damn thing out of it! 😂😂😂😂

Actually l use both a Windows PC and a Mac for my work.

alan279

@KenAquarius

What work do you do on Windows and Mac?

KenAquarius

@alan279

Hi Alan, I use a Mac primarily for graphics. I often work with files that are massive, with placed EPS files that are hundreds of megabytes each. Also use the Mac for conceptual design work. I use the PC for CAD. I design point of sale displays.

So concept work generally begins on the Mac for the rough shapes and graphics. Those shapes are exported from Adobe Illustrator into Artios Cad. There the are refined and made into production ready files. Those CAD files are exported out and imported back into Illustrator for final graphic editing, and art created for printing. This is a simplification of the process but you get the idea. I also use Artios 3D module to create 3D renderings.

@alan279 @abthree just gave me some great advice. In addition, I had planned to touch base with my Geek Squad Remote techs to have them check on the Keyboard driver.  The keyboard is a Logitech K120 Plug and Play (If you're lucky) USB Keyboard.

I think between @abthree's advice, and my Geek Squad I should be OK. If it doesn't work out, I will send you the photo.

There's a vertical bar highlight on the left side of the label for the active  keyboard.  The Space Bar moves it while the Windows key is held down, and you want the highlight on the US keyboard.

@abthree, I have a used 30" computer and keyboard and docking station that I use with my laptop.  Everything works fine but it's about 5 years old and I already have replacements. Those were going to e-waste.

Now that I have an apartment setup in the Nordeste, I could bring and leave those there.

Do you think that I will have to pay customs on used stuff like this?  If I will have, then I would rather not bring as those are only optional hardware

I also work both on Windows and Mac.  Windows for x86 based work and Mac for ARM based.  There are emulation platforms but I eventually have to use them on the actual targets.

In my opinion if you are bringing in any equipment for your own personal use (like a laptop), then that should not be a problem, especially as it is used. If you were to bring in a whole bunch of boxes with gear in them, that may raise questions - but you do have a permanent visa now, so you should be fine!

Great.  Thank you @Peter Itamaraca.

02/03/25 @Pablo888.  Sorry, I was away for a while.  I agree with @Peter Itamaraca:  used computer equipment that you bring with you should not be a problem, assuming that it's traveling with you.  You probably won't even need to declare it, but if you do, it should be obvious that it's used and for your own use, not resale. Since they still work, bringing them and leaving them might be a good idea.

roddiesho

@abthree, @alan279 Thanx Oh Helpful Ones.  Geek Squad fixed it for me remotely, and it seemed somewhat similar to the solution recommended before.  In the end it was not the actual keyboard but the KEYBOARD DRIVER that needed to be updated etc.

So, it's working now?  Cool!

roddiesho

@abthree Well, it was...should have taken pictures. The tech did a great job of having the question mark and the quotes in the right place then......So, I am just about to contact Geek Squad again to help me understand how it was working and then it wasn't and to fix it permanently.

As long as you only have ONE LAPTOP and ONE CELL PHONE per person, you'll be fine. If you go to secondary and they find two, you'll get dinged. Wife and I went thru the red lane a few months ago when officially moving here and the guy specifically told us about this.

Mikeflanagan

If you can prove one laptop is for work - and your other is personal - 2 can be permissible however if you cant prove that its a laptop used to access remote work - no bueno. Also no new boxes, but I only buy my laptops in brazil these days. Same for phones
