Ecuador, a welcoming destination to expats?

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Settling in Ecuador, like every new environment, can feel like stepping into the unknown and brings many questions: how will it go, how to integrate successfully, etc.
To help smooth this transition, we invite you to share your experience since you landed in Ecuador, whether recently or a long ago:

What was your first impression when you arrived?

Did you face any challenges while integrating? Any advice on how to overcome them?

Are there any support programs, groups or events to help newcomers settle in?

Do you find it easy to make friends or connections with locals and fellow expats?

What makes Ecuador a welcoming destination for expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

Settling in Ecuador has been one of the most enriching decisions of my life. Like any major move, it came with uncertainty — especially concerns about long-term security and how we would adapt. But over time, those initial doubts were outweighed by the beauty of the country and the warmth of its people.

My first impression? Ecuador is breathtaking. From the Pacific coast to the Andes, the natural beauty is stunning — and the food, vibrant culture, and relaxed lifestyle immediately made an impact.

Integration had its challenges, of course. Adapting to new systems and building trust in a different business culture takes time and patience. But thanks to the value placed on family here — something that deeply resonates with us — we felt connected early on. Relationships are everything in Ecuador, and once you understand that, doors begin to open.

Making connections has been surprisingly easy. Ecuadorians are warm and open, and there’s a strong, supportive expat community, especially in cities like Guayaquil and Quito. With a little initiative, friendships form naturally.

Ecuador offers something unique for expats: a welcoming culture, a rich and affordable lifestyle, and significant opportunities for those who want to build something meaningful. My wife and I have successfully developed an integrated insurance business, serving both individuals and corporations. It’s been a rewarding journey — not only professionally, but personally.

We are grateful to live in a country where family is a core value, the cuisine is outstanding, and the potential for business is real — even if there are moments of uncertainty.

If you’re considering Ecuador, know this: it’s a place where you can truly create a fulfilling life — as long as you’re willing to embrace it with openness, courage, and respect.

Abrazos,

I love Ecuador, the food, the people, the climate, the geography, everything. If you're new to Ecuador, the best advice I can give is to learn enough Spanish to hold a conversation, it doesn't have to be perfect. The next bit of advice is to do your best to not stick out as a gringo, and integrate into the culture as much as possible. Dress down, no ostentation, and always follow advice on staying safe.

I am since 4th of July 2024 in Quito in Ecuador.

I arrived on Independeence Day off the USA.

Ecuador is beautiful and in the first weeks I traveled with my wife to Azogus, Cuenca and Canar with a tourbus.

Also Quito is beautiful to be were I am living now.

The Spanish language is still challanging. Little by little I learn it.

We made friends in Quito. Some off them speaking English to.

We had a Empanada business with my wife to survive. My wife is very good in making Empanadas and made them in the oven. We tried also taco's and cakes and pies.

Underwhile I am Pastor and being Missionairy with my wife. We made with friends with a Pastor and his church. We trying everything to survive and to bring the gospel to the people.

I am still trying to find a job. I am interested in English teaching jobs, Tourist guide jobs or fruit picking jobs. Who can help with that? Let me know.

God Bless you.
