This article is for you if you wish to drive in Canada. You must possess a valid driver's license and have it with you whenever you drive. There are two conditions for your home country's driver's license to be accepted: it must use the Latin alphabet and have been obtained for more than a year (this may vary by province). So if you plan to and don't know how to proceed, here is some information that may help you.

Which License Do You Need to Drive in Canada?

During the first few months following your arrival in Canada, you can use your foreign driver's license, but to maintain your driving privileges in the long term, you will need to obtain a driver's license from your province of residence. Note that this requirement varies by province. For example, most foreign drivers in have six months to exchange their driver's license, whereas those settling in , except for students, must exchange it upon arrival.

You may also obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before arriving in Canada. The IDP must always be accompanied by your national license. Without your original license, your international permit will have no value.

Driving Regulations in Canada

Each province and territory in Canada has its own laws and regulations regarding road traffic and driver's licenses. Nonetheless, you are always required to carry your driver's license with you when driving. You must also have the vehicle registration certificate and proof of insurance for your vehicle.

In Canada, people drive on the right-hand side of the road. To drive safely, you should familiarize yourself with all the signs and road rules. You can get information from the Ministry of Transportation in the province where you reside.

Obtaining a Driver's License in Canada

To obtain a Canadian driver's license, you must contact the agency responsible for issuing driver's licenses in the province where you live. A driver's license can be issued in stages in some provinces. Different restrictions may therefore be imposed on drivers. For more information, visit the .

If you need to retake a driving test, you will need to study the Canadian Highway Code. You can pay for driving lessons to prepare for the driving tests, but this is not always required for experienced foreign drivers. Some private companies offer lessons for a fee. You can check the yellow pages of your phone book or search online for information on Canadian driving schools near you. Once obtained, your driver's license allows you to drive anywhere in the country. However, if you move to a new province, you will also need to exchange your license for a license from your new province of residence. For example, if you have a British Columbia license and wish to move to Ontario, you will need to exchange your British Columbia license for an Ontario license. However, you will not have to retake any exams. Your license will need to be renewed occasionally, according to the expiration date listed on the document. A recent photo of you will also need to be included.

Good to know:

Some provinces have signed a reciprocity agreement with other countries, allowing nationals from these countries to obtain a driver's license without having to retake a driving test. This is notably the case for Quebec with France. However, you will still need to pay fees for the issuance of your Canadian license.

Renting or Buying a Car in Canada

To rent a car in Canada, you must present your driver's license and a payment card in the name of the main driver. It is not mandatory to have an IDP. However, the payment card and driver's license must be in the same name, as rental agencies will deduct a deposit from the payment card. This amount represents the deductible in case of an accident.

You might consider buying a used car or a new car, if you can afford it. You can apply for a loan from your Canadian bank or make installment payments to your car dealer. This application will be more easily granted to permanent residents who have built a credit history. You will need to have spent some time in Canada for this.

You can also lease a vehicle for a long term with a leasing contract. Some lessees who cannot honor their lease until the end look for someone to take over the contract. This practice might interest you if you are not planning to stay in Canada for long.

To buy a used car in Canada, you simply need to browse the classified ads in newspapers, on Facebook Marketplace, or on websites like . You can purchase your vehicle from a private seller or a dealer. Before making a purchase, take the time to test drive the car and compare different offers.

In addition to the purchase price, you will need to insure and register the vehicle, which will incur additional costs that vary depending on several factors, including the type of vehicle, your driving record, and the province you are in.
