Hi,
I live in the Netherlands and have a Dutch passport. Both of my parents were born in capeverde but now have a Dutch passport.
I'm wondering if it would be a waste if I would not apply for a 2nd passport in cape verde. I'm thinking about buying property in the future.
Any advice if I should apply for a 2nd passport. And what would be the steps for it?
Kind regards,
Elvin

Hi Elvin,
You do not need to have a Cape Verdean passport to purchase property in Cape Verde. Anyone can purchase property and has equal protections under the laws and constitution as a citizen does. So buying property should not be your motivation for a 2nd passport.
Of course, as the child of parents born in Cape Verde, you are entitled to Cape Verdean citizenship. You can easily apply for your citizenship via the CV Consulate in Rotterdam. Or you can submit your application in person at the Cartório in Praia. You will need a copy of your birth certificate and a copy of the birth certificate of either one of your parents. It costs around €40. After a month, you will receive your CV citizenship (it's actually a CV birth certificate stating your country of birth but also conceding citizenship). Your can collect this document from the CV Consulate office in Rotterdam.
Once you have that certificate, you can then apply for your CV national ID card and your CV passport. This can actually be done online at the CV Online Consular post.
