Traveling in Egypt

Amina 1604

I have a question. I have been traveling to Egypt for 20 years and I have my own apartment there. I live alone and I know the conditions in Egypt quite well, but I can't deal with this. I am teaching an Egyptian girl (17 years old) English language online. I have met her family personally and we know each other well . Now I would like to take her on a few trips around Egypt but without guides or travel agencies. But we don't want to travel alone so her brother would go with us as a protector and would help us arrange accommodation, would act as an interpreter... He is not a certified guide, but just a normal Egyptian man. Of course, he would always be accommodated separately. However, I read that they will not let us visit the monuments without a certificated guide... Pyramids, Luxor, Abu Simbel... So I want to ask if this is true? And is it possible to travel around Egypt like this on your own? European and Egyptian woman + Egyptian man (brother) as an escort???

First of all, you absolutely can visit any place you want without a professional guide.

second, how old is the brother?

  1. Families sometimes make stuff up.
  2. Families often horror cast and over estimate how dangerous egypt is. Egypt is incredibly safe but Egyptians are always saying it's incredibly dangerous. Stuff happens but women travel alone in Egypt all the time. Common sense is all you need.
  3. When a girl is 17 she's still very much under her parents control, but when they get older they have more say and freedom.
  4. If they don't want her to travel without her brother, there's really nothing you can do. Her family gets to decide how best to 'protect the women' of the family. She may be from a conservative family.

Sometimes tourism police may intervent, considering you as a tourist and the 2 brothers are accompanying you as "tourist guides" ,as long as I know accompanying tourists still need a license in Egypt,  however, if you have a residence permit you may not be considered a tourist and you can mention that you are going in a tour together.

Your only problem would be in the hotel accommodations
