Hi,
For swimming i usually go to Gezira Sporting Club,
Its a private club with lots of activities to do such as horse riding, swimming, football, basketball...etc
Any sport
It's in Zamalek a very nice area in Cairo.
Going out there are loads of places, i am sure u will not have a problem in hanging out

volky

Thank you very much. I'll do so as soon as I get there. Any idea abt their fees to foreigners ?

take care

gendy

well, i don't know the fees but i go there regurarly so next time i will ask.

But normally i don't pay anything because i have been a member in this club for years, and when a non-member wants to go he pays about 30 L.E

There is also a very good gym in the club.

volky

That's great . Tnx for your help. Is there also a restaurant there ? What's the profile of the visitors in general ?
Tnx again

gendy

People there are highly educated, medium - high class
Membership is very expensive now, usually when u r a member your membership goes to your kids and so on, and you become a separate member when you receive your bachelor degree. If you do not have a bachelor degree and you are above certain again you can not be a member any more. That's why i was saying highly educated people.

There are restaurants there too!. There is Golf, many things to do there . Its a must to see because its different, i don't know if u have such clubs in Turkey, but in Europe they don't have.

The prices are very good, i mean if u want to eat or drink something in the restaurant..etc
u can eat in the same restaurant with a cheaper price than if u eat in the normal streets of Cairo, because its supported by the Club.

There is also a place for kids to play..etc

Let me know if u need any other info. R u com. to Cairo for work ?

volky

Yes, I'll go there to work. but everything will be clear in the coming days.
Refering to the clubs here in Turkey, yes there are many like that in Istanbul. They want annual membership fees.
If the annual fee is reasonable, according to my stay, I may become a member.
Do you have their web address ?
Tnx in advance.

gendy

u r more than welcome, but i don't advise u to be a member unless u r playing to stay in Cairo forever.
Memberships are about 200,000L.E or might be slight less or high
but its a huge amount.
And u pay every 6 months a small amount of fees about 300L.E

They used to do specific memberships for people who r only interested in sports, i think they might b still doing it so its useful for someone like u who is com. for a short period.

Can i know whats your background ? Mine is Technology Consulting Focusing on Software & Systems Security.

Let me know if u want more info.

volky

Thank you for your info. Yes that's a great amount of money to be a member. What I want is to benefit from swimming pool, fitness club , restaurants and cafes, nothing more.
I'm doing garment business

gendy

Most probably i'm going today so i'll ask how much does a foreigner pays to enter and i'll let u know.
talk to u soon!

volky

Tnx a lot. That would be great !
Have a nice day

gendy

Hi volky,

I asked and it's 100L.E for foreigners! the 30L.E is for Egyptians. But they do a membership for Foreigners it will be much better, i don't know details about that. I recommend u pay first the 100L.E spend the day, and see if u wanna do a membership for sports or whatever. The office opens in the day and that's why i couldn't ask about that membership.

when u come to Cairo let me know, we can meet in front of the club and show u around! hope that helps

volky

Thank you very much. That helps a lot. Next weekend, I'll be there for inspection. Probably I'll be there to stay longer after 13th sept.
See you then !

gendy

Great c u soon!

Shorouk

There are many many gyms around cairo which you can join for a reasonable fee as an expat. In general the normal clubs like gendy mentions are very expensive to purchase a membership in.

many of the big hotels have memberships which are expesive, but still "much cheaper" the the normal clubs.they may also have a trail membership.

it will depend on where your are based during your stay in egypt what will be available close by.

There are also some privet clubs managed by expats where you can have a drink and decent meal for a fair price.

volky

Tnx for yr kind info. Probably Nasr City will be the accomodation area for me. Do you know somewhere closeby, run by expats or a hotel where a nice pool to swim is available and a fitness center ? The visitor profile is also very important.
Or you can recommend a hotel where abv mentioned conditions are available.
Thank you for yr kind reply

Shorouk

close to nasr city but in Heliopolis you will find a they have three locations.good meals done by local cooks these clubs also serve alcohol and are a good place to met other expats.

there are a couple of other clubs also ran by ex-pats.

the Sonesta hotel is only about ten minutes from nasr city.also the Le Merredin hotel on oruba st.

I lived in nasr city for about four years its really crowed.

volky

Tnx a lot. You helped a lot. But I couldn't see a swimming pool at BCA clubhouse. Maybe I missed.
what's yr opinion abt Nasr City *

gendy

If u did not rent a place yet , i recommend that u get a place in Zamalek or Mohandesien because they are more close to the best places whether gym, clubs, restaurants.

volky

A collegue of mine who's been living in Egypt is look for a flat for me. I'll take yr advise to him. Tnx

bca club, no pool as i recall, but for a nice meal and meeting some other expats for advice its a worth while membership and its cheap.

Is your work near to the nasr city area, due you have housing located there already.I see you have somebody searching for you if they understand the workings of the local apartment trade they should find you a decent place at a fair rate Nasr city is sort of expensive for flats as its full of people.

Its really full of people but you can find everything you need pretty easly located there.

volky

Not yet arranged anything. A collegue is handling that for me. Are only members allowed to get in BCA club or anyone ?

generally only those with a forigen passport are allowed membership and members are allowed guest for some small fee.

volky

do you know the membership fee ?

Shorouk

I know two other clubs have fees on a yearly basis of around one hundred us.

volky

That's quite reasonable.
tnx a lot

I treid to email the bca club but the email link is down but im pretty sure somebody here will know the currently yearly price.

the prices i mention are for other clubs run along the same concept as the bca club

your welcome

volky

Dear all,

I paid my first visit to Cairo last week end after a 10 yrs time. I must say I was quite surprised against what I've seen. Starting from the new airport (I don't know when it has been constructed but new for me) the plces like Starcity and new accomodation sites impressed me so much.
Next week , I'll come again to settle this time. I don't know how long it will be but I feel that I'll enjoye my time there.

See you all soon
