Taxation in Nairobi

Mdboy

Hi,

I might be relocating to Nairobi to work for the Kenyan branch of my company.  I would be paid Kenyan shillings.

Can someone give me an idea of how my salary will taxed? That is, what percentage of earning are taxed at each shilling threshold (assuming Kenya has a graduated tax system).

Any information would be much appreciated.  The taxation level affects how much I'll have left for housing since I'll be given a very limited housing budget.

Hi,
To make it simple, the tax rate will be 30%
There're other, and lower, Tax Bands but they're for quite low incomes.
Hope it helps
Thanks!

Thanks, Fab.

Do you know if the Kenyan taxes include some form of Social Security payments (in the US Social Security payments fund a minimal retirement and health care at 65)?

Just asking since these payments are usually mandatory for Americans for the US system whether or not you are working in the US.  If I know these payments are also part of the Kenyan taxation system, I'd probably ask my company to help me avoid this double taxation for two retirement systems.

Thanks.

Residents are subject to tax on income accruing in or derived from kenya and from employment or services rendered abroad.non-residents are taxed only on kenyan source income. Individual income tax is charged at progressive rates upto 30% personal relief of 13,944/= per annum & life insurance relief of 15% of the premium subject to a max of 36000/=
yes.retirement scheme and social security payments are part of the tax system so i think you will need to talk to your employer.

Work on about a third of your money going on tax.
Whatever you earn.
I don't know the breakdown... I just know I have a sob once a month.

legal advice: foreigners in kenya are classified as non residents. They are taxed under three main categories: business income, income from farming and employment income. For the first Kshs. 121,968/- they are taxed 10 percent. For the next 114,912/- they are taxed 15 percent. For the next 114,912, 20 percent, for the next 114,912, 25 percent and 30 percent for income over 466,704/-.  For taxation, u will need to submit details such as your salary, bonuses, allowances and gross pay.feel free to get in touch for further legal guidance and clarification.
