Best hospitals in Nairobi?

AllyWest

Hi there! I'm a nurse from the UK and looking for a move to Kenya for maybe a year or two. Any recommendations for good hospitals in Nairobi that I should be seeking employment with?

Hi, the best hospitals are the private ones!.   So, you have Aga Khan,  Nairobi Hospital,  MP Shah, Karen Hospital, Gertrudes Childrens Hospital.

As for getting a job in one.  Well, unfortunately its not just a case of 'rocking up' in Kenya and starting work, even in a voluntary capacity.  You must have a work permit to legally work there.  For the health sector, there is also the need to register to practice.  The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) is the body which regulates nursing.  You may be required to do some sort of internship (unpaid).

Nursing is a profession where there is a high rate of unemployment, with often poor pay and working conditions.  The government have progressively tightened up on the issuance of work permits, particularly for professions where there is a high rate of local unemployment, as they don't want foreigners taking local jobs.  If you have a specialism which is short supply locally, your chances of getting a job would be increased.  You could try sending your CV out to individual hospitals.

I am an occupational therapist and to be honest its become so complicated to register to practice.  Additionally I wouldn't be able to manage on a local salary of around £215 per month.  The other big issue might be that you cannot assume that your salary will regularly be paid at the end of each month.  Thats OK though, if you have independent financial means.
