Living in Mauritius
just for information to apply for occupational visa as self employed, what kind of business on small scale can generate MUR 600,000 per year and how much in USD would be the initial investment. For self employed can I do a business on partnership and if so , should both partners generate MUR 600,000 each.
Registered address means a legal address to contact if needed. A number of countries (I think including Mauritius) allow registration of many companies (unlimited number) under one address. So, as to me, you can simply pay for the secretarial fee to a company, which is willing to register a company at their address and perform such duties (of a company secretary). Generally, companies doing the registration assistance service provide that service as well. Good luck!
Hi Julien (and others)
For many years Mauritius managed to keep HIV/AIDS prevalence rate very low (not only compared to Africa but the world average). For example, in 2001 there were about 700 reported cases. I read an article yesterday and checked some reliable sources (WHO, CIA Factbook), they posted the number of 17,000 cases (or 1.8-2.0% of adult population). The reason, as they mention, is rapidly increasing number of illicit drug users. I wouldn't like to see the country "catching up" to get to rates in Sub-Saharan Africa, but...
Those are numbers, I would like to know the situation with the desease and drug addiction there, as it has a direct influence on crime rate. So things can go worse over time.
Thank you.

I visited Mauritius last year and I simply loved the place! My sister is now a Mauritian national.
I am about to complete my BBA, and I was considering of moving to Mauritius. Can someone please guide me how to find a decent job there. And what starting salary should I expect.
Hello everyone,
I am new here - just joined the forum. My husband has an offer to work at a place called Moka in Mauritius. Does anyone know anything about the place? I essentially want to know how is it to live and work in Moka? The job pays 6000 US Dollars a month, plus 2 bedroom accomodation. Is that a good deal?
Thanks in advance!
~menja
It is a good deal, you will earn aprox 220 000 MUR and you can live very well here with this money! Moka is nice, although not so close to the beach but a 25 minutes drive will bring you to a nice sandy beach. Moka is humid and cool in winter.
Hi Julien,
It was very enlightening, going through your posts & replies to all the queries. May need more interaction with you in the coming days

What's a good salary for an Architect with two school going kids and a wife and cat?
Hi Julian,
Hows it going, looking forward to Christmas?
My names Paul I run a number of internet sites which basically means I can work from anywhere with an internet connection.
I have been living in Spain (costa del sol) with my partner and 2 young children (4 & 2) for the last 2yrs.
I am getting itchy feet and been looking for a great place to bring up the kids in a safe enviroment away from the hussle or normal European lifestyle.
Could you or anyone else provide me so me info on the following.
Costs of private English Education in Mauritius.
Quality of Internet connection.
General costs of living such as Electric, food shop for family of 4 petrol etc.
Could you reccomend any companies for long term property rentals and what would the cost of a beach from property be.
Which areas would you reccomend for a family which are safe for the kids.
I will be paid in Sterling around £4,500 per month, would that be enough for a family to have a decent lifestyle over their?
Many thanks and Merry Christmas to all,
Paul

Hi everyone,
I am planning to move to Mauritius around June this year and have been digging the forum for a while for some information. I found many useful things but I still got some questions. Hope someone can help.
First of all, do you think June would be a bad time to arrive? I think it is the beginning of the high season and I'm afraid the rental costs may be higher in June. Is this true and how much difference in rents do you think there will be between the high and low seasons?
I'm not yet sure in which area to settle. Guess I will figure that out after a tour on the island. What do you think are my chances in finding a house or an apartment directly from its owner in June? The duration of my stay will depend on how much I'll like the island and whether I'll be able to adapt. So in the beginning, I am planning to make a 3 months contract. Do you think making such a short term contract will also increase the rent?
Any advice on finding an accomodation will be of great value to me.
Another issue is internet access as my job depends on it. I heard Emtel is providing 3G services and it seems it will be the best method of access for me at the beginning. Do you know if there is an Emtel salespoint at the airport so I can be online as soon as I get there?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers
Ozgur
UKCarAds > you'll live like a prince with such an income here. Have a look to the other discussions and to the guide section, you will find answers to most of your questions
twdyeung > You'll have to pass the tests and your wife will certainly have to do so. Maybe you should contact the BOI ? boimauritius.com
Ozgur > the high season starts in July. Finding an accommodation is not a big problem in Mauritius. As you can imagine, landlords prefer to rent on a year basis. You should have a look to lexpressproperty.com for accommodations
Emtel network can be really bad, depending on your location. I've got an Emtel phone and the network is really bad at home. I think the best option is to install Orange in your house.
Thanks for the advice Julien!
Seems I won't be able to find a mobile internet solution then. Do you know how long it takes Orange to make the installation after application?
Ozgur
It depends where on the island you're installed. I know this doesn't help I found an house where the internet/orange was already installed
You're lucky! Hope I can find a house with an internet connection, too.
I've never been to Mauritius, but from what I've read here and there, I'll probably stay in Flic-eniFlac or Grand Baie.
I can't wait to be there..Only 3 months left!
HI JULIEN. I AM NEW HERE AND WOULD LIKE TO ASK A FEW QUESTIONS.I VISITED MAURITIUS A FEW TIMES IN THE PAST AND DECIDED TO MOVE THERE. I AM THINKING OF STARTING A SMALL BUISSINESS. DO YOU PERHAPS KNOW WHAT KIND OF BUISSINESS WOULD WORK OVER THERE? I WOULD ALSO BE WILLING TO PARTNER WITH SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH A " BIT OF CASH". I LOOK FORWARD TO HEAR FROM YOU. JOHAN
Greetings all!
I have been living outside of my own country for more than half of my life and have had the chance to visit and work on three different continents. At this very moment I am back to Europe and I find the place too depressing, with people always trying to make their living and spending more than they are actually earning on the things they don't necessarily need. Even though I do have a wonderful position in a five star hotel at the moment, my thoughts keep turning towards Africa with all goods and bads it has to offer.
I have never been myself in Mauritius but my lady has been working there for a few seasons and has a bunch of friends still living with their families there. Even though they are still pretty much enjoying their stay there, I do still have a few doubts concerning moving there myself.
Let me start with the trivial first. My line of work is hospitality, restaurants and catering in particular. The years of my employment in multiple restaurants across the globe and having one of my own in Japan have taught me that whenever I go, I will always find a job, since everybody likes to eat and even more to eat good. How hard will it be to get a decent job in Mauritius with a promising contract that includes bonuses, holidays and whatever there is to offer in a "normal" contract? One of the biggest turn-offs in Italy has been the fact that close none holds true to their word, whether it is business or a beer over the weekend.
My hopes are high concerning the language barrier that I have encountered before in some countries, but I guess that with my English I will be able to get by, I also speak more than just fluent Japanese, Italian, Estonian and Russian languages.
The documents are the least of my worries, once there is a job, those won't be a problem to get.
Besides all stated above, I would like to ask a question to the veteran expats that live in Mauritius. If it happened that you have decided to move to another country with a bit more expensive standards of living, will your earnings over the seas allow you to do that? I would hate to get stuck in a place I might learn to dislike over some time, like it happened to me once in Finland.
Hi Julien (and everyone else), I see there hasnt been any posts in a while???
I may be taking a job in Mauritius and if so moving in the next month or two...
The only drawback I can foresee is being away from friends and family. Although I'm from Ireland and living in London, I've developed a good network of friends and Dublin is but a short flight away.
I've have no problems travelling and experiencing new things alone before but if I'm gonna be in Mauritius for a few years, I'd like to think I'll be able to develop a network of friends relatively close to my age, with simlar interests (I'm 30 by the way)...
I suppose what I'm getting at is, whether there are is a decent network of expats around my age? I've noticed a lot of the guys and girls on the forums are here with families or are middle-aged business types. Of course I have no issues with making friends with people from different nationalities or age groups or people with children but it would be nice to know there are some young singletons about
I hear Mauritians a very friendly and welcoming too, do the locals mix well with the expats?
Any advise feedback will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Damien

Hi, would love to hear updates from everyone. Has Mauritius lived up to expectations?
Thanks
Hi,
A prospective employer is interested in hiring me to Mauritius, but not revealing their salary offer. They want me to reveal my expected figure to them.
I am earning INR 1.5 million currently in India and I have a family with one daughter, 8 years old. What should be an approximate salary which I should be asking as I am not sure about the cost of living & medical expenses there.
The job offer includes a rented house as well as a car for moving around.
Thanks for helping me out.

You don't say what type of function or your employment would be ?
Hi,
This would be basically, a customer support engineer, looking after the clinical laboratory diagnostics instruments.
Automated biochemistry, immunoassay and haematology instruments!!
Thanks
Arun
greetings for the day.
I am considering to locate and settle in Mauritius and while gathering information I have come across following information which may or may not be true. So, please comment:
1. There is milk supply problem
2. There is power supply and mobile network issues
3. The locals specially taxi drivers force and chase expat till the expat get annoyed. Hawkers over charge foreigners.
4. Potable water problem is going there in Mauritius
5. Climate is very hot and without AC life is miserable
6. Daily requirements like medicines, clinics, hair cutting saloon, plumbers etc are not near walking distance of the IRS/RES
7. No of schools are very less than required. º£½ÇÂÒÂ× find very difficult admission in schools.
8. Any other problem you would like to bring to notice:
Thank you.
