Canadian immigration to South Africa

margiepuffs

Hi all,

I am a Canadian citizen, been interning in South Africa under a visitor's visa and am looking to apply for a life partner permit as I moving in with my South African boyfriend to Joburg.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret

Welcome to South Africa! My best recommendation for you would be to make use of the Home Affairs office in Sandton rather than the one in Germiston. If you've done enquiries you'll find that these are the only two which handle foreigners in Johannesburg, and Germiston is a nightmare. Sandton is at least more controlled, but beware that you're going to have to stand outside the building in a queue to get a ticket before you can go upstairs to the floor you need to be on (a security guard there will accept the ticket you were given downstairs). I don't know how it works for life partners, but you might benefit from what my wife and I did - the visa fees were waived because she was married to a South African citizen. Oh, and one last time goes without saying: try to ensure that you have all your documents lined up before going to Home Affairs, because you don't want to be turned away because something is missing, or have to go through all of that again. If you can, try get your temporary residence permit endorsed for your place of work at the same time, because otherwise you have to go through the whole process again for just that.
