expat.com

Hi there,

Which are your 10 favorite places to go out in Johannesburg?

Which places would you recommend to newcomers? (restaurants, pubs, discos, theaters, cinemas, concert halls...)

Thanks!

Hey...

As a South African, i consider myself somewhat qualified to comment on this post...

Joburg is a phenomenal place, but trying to tell someone what to do would be like looking for an abandoned car on the Dubai Airport!

There are too many things to do, and depending on who you are, how old you are, how much resources (cash) you have, how muc adrenalin you have, how sporty you are... the list could be endless.

The best you can do tho, is to find someone localand ask to hang with them...?

I lived in Sandton years ago... and even then, it changed at a fast pace ! Eight years later, I don't know if many of my "spots" are still up ! :-P

Things change very quickly here in SA. The botanical gardens are always worth a visit during the cay if you just need to get out and get some fresh air

okay here is a low down...

Sandton city if you are over 35ish and want the rich, flashy crowd. I guess the mandela square. Try the restaurants in illovo, roseboys if you are gay and even straight, rosebank mall for the shopping and hyde park, if you really are wealthy!

Greenside if you are 18 to 28 and want the young trendy/ normal people crowd. My favourite, tokyo star, go try Gin of you are young, all other places good for any age...

Newtown and inner city- the "cool cats" arty, fashionista crowd. 16 to 40 year old (I know its a wide gap, but its just from personal experience). Try out a new club called  and alexander theatre. Stanley avenue is a nice place to chill during the day.

Fourways and monte casino-  mostly for people who stay close by there, I hear its pretty good. 18 to 50 year old, lots of places to try out. Try Manhattans on a friday or saturday or monte casino, billys is also good. As is FTV in cedar square.

Bedfordview and eastern suburbs, hear its pretty good too, very italian, catholic crowd that hang there... 21 to 50 yrs. Try the News Cafe...

Anyone got some suggestions? This is my quick version and there is a lot more! I have only been staying in joburg for over a year now so I still have a lot to learn.

Big tip, i find Rosebank Mall very European, dont know why but have seen lots of french and spanish people there?!?!

Waldorph, well, that's thorough. Thanks for the tips !
I haven't heard of many of those spots when I was in Jo'burg... Maybe didn't have a clue either :-D

okay guys, just an update on some more places to try out... I heard there is a bar called Kitcheners in Juta rd, Braamfontein. They play a variety of dance to live music and are open most week days, try it.

If you are here on business and older than 35 , and you want a beer, pub lunch and a place to watch sports, try the sports clubs in and around joburg. Wanderers Club has a great bar, so too does Zoo Lake Bowling club (be warned it gets very very young on weekends, but a great party), try Johannesburg Country Club and if you have loads of money go to "Moloko", its in Rosebank...

okay, thats it!

Will keep you posted :)

Action Netball & Cricket are the order of the day in Joburg if you ask me. Great place to meet other people, have a beer and some food and have a giggle playing sport. There are sites allover Joburg and it's really helped me in the last year and a half to make some like minded friends. The standard of netball isn't too bad either compared to the UK. Give it a go.
