Road safety in Tanzania

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Navigating roads and experiencing traffic in Tanzania as an expat can be a learning experience. We invite you to share your insights in order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats stay safe on the road in Tanzania, whether driving, cycling or just crossing the street.

Are traffic rules strictly respected or enforced in Tanzania?

Are there any unspoken rules, unexpected habits or regulations that you had to adapt to?

Are the roads safe and well-maintained?

Are there specific times of day, weather conditions, or seasons that make driving more dangerous?

If you have children, do you feel comfortable letting them travel alone on local roads, whether on foot, by bike, or motorbike?

What are your tips or advice to stay safe on the roads in Tanzania?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

Hi  Cheryl

Tanzania Road safety -

as a expat ,Traffic rules should follow in all circumstances.

All proper documents with you in Physical Forms should carry with Vehicles ( driving license , RC , Insurance as well fitness certificate Including Tyres health .

Crossing street : for walking peoples who are crossing road with crossing sign , what ever vehicles you are driving should stop and allow peoples to cross the road . This is mandatory n Tanzanian traffic rules (unspoken rules).

particularly Dar es sallam is safe during day time up to 8 PM , should not go outside without car after 8 PM as a safety for ourselves . other places in Tanzania are  closed by max 7 PM .

Highways are good and well maintained .

Normally road are maintained in city exceptionally some busy congested old  ( Kisutu ) are not properly maintained.

Now Tanzania have  All weather roads . take care during heavy showering .

Safe for children : yes it s safe but do not allowed them to talk on phone during on the road  walking as now a day in last three years , snatching by bike thief's are common . by bike should have all documents well helmets for both .

Tanzanian normally are very good, Give respect and get respect as well gain confidence .

One more thing , Tanzanian have a mindset that you are expat so you are rich and have a money , so do  not show money in public  places and keep low in public appearance .

Tanzania was governed under the British rules so what ever dirty practices still in government peoples mind . so dont argue with any Government peoples and still polite during any unwarranted situation and still calm.

Tanzania is very beautiful and god grace gifted  country . I loved to much as well it is my second home .

I never feel as a outsider and have a very good memories of North or South Tanzania during my car trips.

I can say proudly Tanzania is generally crime free country compare to all African countries and to much safe for º£½ÇÂÒÂ× or can say any one .

Again say  Tanzania is very beautiful country with lot of wild safaris , Good Forest and clear water sea shore / Beaches .

in Final word , you Should visit Tanzania without any fear in mind .
