As you can read on earlier threads you need to come in on an Ordinary visa, not a tourist visa.

After a week you can apply for an extension of stay (EOS).

If you have an address in Cambodia you should take proof of that with you on the trip into Thailand as they can be demanding sometimes. You also should show, when asked, $600 in cash.
Even if you return to Cambodia same day they could ask for those things. Usually an onward ticket is required but if you get a bus ticket back plus confirmation of your address in Cambodia it should be fine. But you never know, Thai Immigration is not the easiest one.

In any way dress properly (not like going to the beach), shaven and be polite.

I don't know, ask in Siem reap.

Please note that when entering Thailand you may be asked for evidence of an onwards flight and also be asked to show, cash in hand, 20,000 baht. I am 99% sure this has to be Thai currency and that US$ will not be acceptable. (Also bank statements etc are not accepted - it has to be cash.)

there is a small travel agent across the Royal Crown Hotel in SR, on Makara St. that sells tickets to Poipet for $7 one way.
That is where we bought ours to go to Thailand in order to get our ordinary visa before applying in SR for our retirement visa, a very easy affair.
We are waiting for it now, it takes 2 weeks.

We did the border run at Poipet 3 weeks ago, nobody asked us anything special. We only stayed 30 minutes in Thailand before getting back to Cambodia, no problem at all on either side.
I was a bit unsure about the crossing though as this was the 2nd time we would enter Thailand in 2 months, but that was not an issue at all.
We obtained an ordinary visa so that we could apply for our retirement visa which we did a couple of days ago.

Hi , and  for those who don't know,   you can now go in Thailand by road only twice a calendar year, and after that, you need a visa that you can get at the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.
You need 40$, a picture and a evidence of adequate finance from your bank, waiting time 2 days.   
This is a one entrance visa for 2 months.

Hi  ,   this adress is to remember but you can also wait a car on the road to Poipet or to go near the upper market Psah Lun , or more near the "Borey Rattanak hotel"  near Borey Seang Nam ( the just  nearly road give access to Borey Seang Nam , Siem Reap bus station, )
But 7$ is a right price, when you know that the real price is 6.25 , 25000 riels.

You say you can go into thailand twice a year overland is that 1 month per time?
And you said after that you need a visa for 2 months, is that a Thai tourist visa?
And how many of those can you get a year at phnom phen per year?

Thailand is very complicated, like this:

1. Most foreigners arriving by air get a visa-free stay of 30 days. That can be extended for another 30 days in the country.

2. Most foreigners crossing a land border get 15 days visa-free.  Some nationalities get 30days.

Arrive twice a year, no matter how long you stay but there was a rule of not more than 180 days a year.

The tourist visa you get from the Thai embassy is 60 days but you pay for it and have to prove financial funds.
