Are you marrying an Indian citizen? If so, you may be able to get a PIO card. You need to be legally married and have proof. With a PIO card you can work for any company unencumbered. You will need to arrange for a PAN and AAdhar card in order to work and pay taxes. These are relatively simple to get. You will have to apply to the FRRO - Foreigners Regional Registration Office for PIO status and they decide whether or not your case is approved.

If you are NOT marrying an India citizen, things will be much more difficult. There are significant barriers to working in India, starting with the salary threshold - you need to be making around 150,000 rupees per month, which is a very high salary here in India. You will also need to find a company that is willing to bear the costs of arranging your work visa. You will have to back to the Philippines with all your paperwork and apply from your home country. You will only be able to work for that one company. If you decide to change jobs, you will have to return home and start over again.

Work visas are only good for one year and require annual extensions for the next four, after which you will have to go home and reapply for a fresh work visa even if you have stayed with the same company. This is expensive and time consuming (and don't get me started on those annual FRRO visa runs... expats say the abbreviation stands for Foreigners Rectal Reaming Office for a reason). There is one loophole in this when it comes to salaries - if you are teaching or working in an NGO, they may waive the salary condition.

It is OCI Card now after marriage. You are eligible to apply after 2 years of marriage. Only then you will get legal job permit.

Doh! OCI. Right. PIO is for "People of Indian Origin". What does OCI stand for?

The original poster is from the Philippines and that may be an option for her, but most Americans will be unlikely to give up their American citizenship due to the fact that we don't need visas for most countries. I've been traveling on five continents and I only needed visas for Brazil and Myanmar. I managed the travel arrangements for up to 50 Indian colleagues at a time for different trade shows, which required reams and reams of bank statements, health statements and all sorts of other information to generate visas for nearly everywhere we went. It's quite unfair to Indian businessmen who need to travel regularly.
