Preventive care in Malaysia

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

As an expat in Malaysia, taking care of your health would be one of your main priorities. Preventive healthcare plays a crucial role in keeping fit and healthy. We therefore would like to invite you to share your insights on preventive care in Malaysia, so as to best take care or your health as an expat and navigate the local healthcare system.

Here are a few questions to start with:

What preventive care plans and measures are available in Malaysia?

Can expats easily access preventive healthcare services?

Does health insurance cover preventive care in Malaysia or is there any other scheme available? Any tips to choose the right plan?

How to get informed about preventive care plans or events: any useful website, hotline, or media that you’ve found helpful?

What is the local attitude towards preventive care and how did you adjust to it?

Share your experiences and tips to help fellow expats.

Thank you for your contribution.

Great post Cheryl.

I only do medical insurance and don't bother with preventative healthcare.  In other words, when I feel unwell I will see a doctor.

Dude!  As a 65 year old who has gone through some pretty major health problems this year I want to encourage you to do preventive health care.  I'm (barely) here to tell you that there is no other sensation like having 72 million volts of electricity and fear coursing through your body while wide awake in an effort to get your heart back in rhythm.

Thanks Ziggy. You're actually younger than me but I do try to watch what I eat and do some exercise. Sometimes take tablets to lower cholesterol......

Ok Cheryl, you have to differentiate between preventive health and insurance-funded preventive health.

As I know, most insurance doesnt cover routine exams but sometimes hospitals or Drs have "preventive health" drives which in reality serve to get new patients with real health problems. Generally, nobody will pay for preventive health, especially if their insurance wont contribute. They wait until sick, period. But is it available, regardless of who pays? Of course. For a fee, like RM80 or RM800, Drs will screen you for various things but who wants to know they have some early disease? I bet nobody does.

That said, many people are interested in improving their lifestyle and so they are more aware today of measures like what to eat and how to exercise. Some people do everything they can. Malaysia isnt the place for healthy eating, though. I seriously doubt the govt will ever ban sugar, salt and oil, the main ingredients of all foods and some of our many killers.

Great topic Cheryl.  I shall fly into Penang on 16 Nov and would be keen to learn what might be available in respect of health assessment and preventive healthcare.  Count me in; I'm all for it  :-)
