20 ft shipping container Los Angeles to Bohol?

Moab762

I need to ship a vehicle and assorted tools, home goods, personal effects etc. From Los Angeles to Bohol.

Cursory search with AI gives me 20ft shipping container prices of $1000-$3500.

Never done this before. Need to transport items (vehicle I assume I can drive) from 30 minutes from Long Beach. Long Beach to Cebu(?). Cebu to Tagbilaran City, Bohol. Then transport to storage.

Advice?

I'm sure I can find a trucking company from my location in LA to the shipping container at Long Beach. But how are items loaded into the container? Are they strapped down? What is that process?

I'm assuming I can hire a trucking company to transport from Cebu to Tagbilaran(?). Do I have to be present when it's unloaded in Cebu? I guess I want to be right? To catalog everything is there.

What do I need to be able to drive the vehicle? Can that be handled prior to arrival? Or is it simpler/cheaper to have it transported to Tagbilaran? And handle registration/inspection (don't know what has to be done) there? Are there import taxes involved for a personal vehicle? Cost to replace far exceeds the money I have into it. 2012 Jeep JKU.

Any advice gladly accepted. Or links to more information.

Gratitude in advance.

We shipped a 20 ft container to Davao from Louisville Kentucky in 2022. We used Allied Van Lines as they had agents on each end. Dealing with a single source/person is highly recommended. They will have latest info on vehicle importation and cost.

We only shipped household goods no vehicles or high end electronics.   Shipment was in my Wife’s name and under her Philippine passport   No surprises and everything arrived damage free

No experience bringing imported vehicles here, but my experience with Customs and LTO BS in titling and registering tells me that it may not be worth the effort.

Getting it here would be the easy part compared to the bureaucracy involved in making it legal.

You can do a quick google search on all the docs needed to import vehicle’s here to see if your up for that Challenge.

Everyone situation is different but for me I sold Everything , House, furniture, cars etc before coming here. Brought a few checkins on plane and bought all new here. I would do it the same way all over again. No regrets

You omitted the most important thing: What was the cost door to door?

The difficulty in registering a vehicle in the Philippines far outweighs the benefits, especially if you are bringing it in to place into storage!

You don’t address if other items (household goods, etc…) would be involved either. So focusing on the vehicle shipment alone, I can’t imagine why you would go to the effort, trouble & expense of such a plan.

Moving from the USA to the Philippines involves leaving things behind (even if you treasure them…) and hitting the reset button. You aren’t in Kansas any more…

Sounds expensive but I can only assume because of the storage and the US is a heck of a lot further away compared to Brisbane Australia from the Philippines.

The company we used was door to door, had their own forwarding company in Manila as well as other cities here.

They delivered a shipping container to our farm 2 hours north of their depot, as arranged we had a month to pack and manifest the contents and packed it floor to ceiling, front to back including filling all the empty cupboards etc. The better half did all the paperwork with the forwarders, port Authority and customs, I arrived a few days later ready to help,,,,,, the container arrived on a short semi and a van with 5/6 workers and all travelled some 7 hours north from Manila to our property. Container pins not touched and simply we directed the workers where to put the contents, it was seamless and highly recommend the company and their forwarders, we gave them P2K for their dinner on the way back to Manila. Done and dusted and a happy camper here.

As for shipping a vehicle and OMO,,,,,, forget it, heartache and anguish will follow as well as heaps of bucks. We looked at shipping an SL350 Merc and a 508 Peugeot wagon, both only a few years old but RHD and illegal here so that was easy and as for shipping a LHD set of wheels especially if older will open a can of worms and tragedy. Honestly? Just buy new here and save your money and all the dilemmas that will come. research as there is plenty of topics on this and other sites that will open your eyes.

BTW Greg, our total cost to ship our belongings here 6/7 years ago was a little under AU 9K, you can do the math to US bucks but a guess would be like well under US 6K.

Aside matters little as long as you are happy.

Cheers, Steve.

I had 3 bids all were within $750 USD.

Two things that probably increased the price was that the shipper was required to have an actual company presence on both ends, didn’t want it to be subcontracted out to the lowest bidder in Manila Packing and unpacking I just pointed at what was to be shipped and where to place the object upon unpacking.

It went by rail to Los Angeles then shipped to Manila then transferred to another vessel for delivery to Davao

I admit it wasn’t cheap, but I wanted quality furnishings and after a career of 35 years working all over the world in the oil industry we had items of value to us.

You can’t take it with you, might as well enjoy what time we have.

In 2017 we paid 14K for a 40 foot container shipped from Cary NC to Dumaguete door to door. Including packing all items in the house and loading the container. No storage. We had to pay about $3k in customs fees at the port, then shipment proceeds from Cebu to Dumaguete by truck. We had arrived at BB visa so no SRRV tax discount but slight BB tax discount as I recall.

I'm on the verge of moving to the Philippines and shipping all my household goods to Cebu, Philippines from Florida.  $1K-$3.5K seems very low to get a car and other items to Bohol.  The quotes I have received once my households goods for my 2 bedroom apartment were tallied (no car being shipped) is between $8K and $10K.  There is also a delay once your goods arrive (unless you plan your residency Visa properly) -or- you already hold a Visa from the Philippines, you can't import anything (well, you can import it, but you can't pick it up at the port until your Visa is approved for residency).  Keep in mind, if your household goods/car arrive at the port and you don't have your Visa approved, the port will charge $600 USD/day (on average) to store it.  It is better to store your items in the U.S. and arrive in the Philippines to start your Visa paperwork (takes about 2 months) and you cannot start Visa paperwork for residency until you are Physically in the Philippines.  Also, a 20 ft container shipped to the Philippines on a cargo ship takes about 7-10 weeks to arrive so you need to plan for that as well.

I obviously don't know your situation, but this is what I'm working through to make the move.

Hope this helps.

I must not have email notifications set up properly. Didn't see all these great replies until now. Thank you all.

Honestly the 20ft container was for the vehicle. And since there would be a ton of extra room. I assumed I could load it with other stuff. I don't have a lot that is if such sentimental value that I would need a shipping container. But I figured if I could bring my shop tools they'd be helpful in the province. And some furniture that is of better quality.

But it doesn't sound like the vehicle idea is going to pan out. I have about 20k into it. And a cursory search of replacements in the PH were twice that cost. But it's a Jeep. Not super popular in the PH. So a different vehicle might be in the works. This is disappointing. As I just put a new motor in it, it's been excellently cared for, so fewer surprises down the road. I was hoping.

I guess I will rethink this. Get a different vehicle. And leave alot more behind than I had planned. What is the best shipping method for whatever I choose to bring? Would be the size of boxes or heavy plastic storage boxes.

My gf is from Bohol. I've been in La Union with her the last two months. LDR before that. We are moving to Bohol on the 18th. Just into a rental. Then long term someplace on the island.

I was stationed here in the military long ago. And had a 6 yr relationship with a stateside Filipina also long ago. So I am somewhat familiar with the culture. And only familiar with the bureaucracy enough to know I want to avoid it as much as possible.

Any advice on buying a vehicle here? Stateside I would have found something reliable with high production numbers (ease of parts and mechanics), low mile, run a Carfax, and had it inspected by a mechanic. How different is that going to be?

Moab762

Btw the shipping container prices were from AI. I had not begun calling around yet.

I am not sure what you mean by email responses but if you mean how do you get notifications on the forum of responses by the bell at the top in red, right next  to your profile picture to say somebody has responded or liked your post - it is happening to me right now and may not be anything to do with your end. I know somebody posted something about this before.Mine just seems to have a mind of it's own and functions when it wants.

Moab762

Usually you can get an email when someone responds to your threads. Or threads you've posted too. I don't see that clearly in settings. I'm not getting them. That's for sure.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy.

Simply click on your profile (top R/H corner next to the magnifying glass) Select notification settings, turn on and off what you want. Also check your account settings in the same area, interesting as normally notifications are set at default.

Good luck.

Cheers, Steve.

The only notification that looks appropriate is "forum". And that is selected to get emails by default. But I am not getting them. And they aren't in my spam.

I will simply say, it will definitely be a tricky one.  I wanted to bring my vehicle here to Cebu, since it was only 1 yr old, but the Duties and Tariff charges were nearly twice the cost of the vehicle.  I opted to leave it in the US.  I was also told by the local (Cebu) shipping company that handled the shipment of my containers that registering my vehicle would be a serious challenge.  I also shipped a Zero turn lawnmower, and the Duties and Tariff cost were three times the charge for my two containers.  For some reason it was charged separately.

Yes. This sucks. I keep my vehicles in tip top condition. Guess I need to start all over.

Did you end up purchasing a vehicle in the PH? What strategies did you use?

Back in 2017 when we shipped a 40 foot to Cebu, our total duty invoice was about 150k php. Not too bad. The customs people didn't really look inside so much. Anything in the back would be totally unnoticed but I suppose they go by the list of items the shipper gives them. A zero turn lawnmower being dutied at 3x the cost of 2x20 foot containers? That would be 3 x $14000.00 or $42K...for a riding lawnmower? What am I missing? Couldn't you just let them confiscate it? People don't generally use riding lawnmowers here; they just use what we call "trimmers" for the whole lawn and you pay them 1500 php to cut it for you. Good luck finding parts or even finding someone to sharpen the blades although gas powered push mowers exist here. I bought one for our helper but the lawn cutters just use the trimmers and it goes pretty fast
