Hello my name is Christopher, I am considering the idea of moving to Phuket. I am a hairstylist and ready for a change in the US. I have just started the process but would love your feedback on the best way to get started. I will be in Phuket to meet several salon owners and check some areas out. The task on the legalities seem daunting if you are american and expat please give me your advice and your experience. Thanks!

Phuket is really a terrible place and I am speaking from more than 10 years of experience. It is the most expensive, the most corrupt and second most polluted place in Thailand. There are a lot of much nicer, cleaner, friendlier and cheaper places for you to live.

I've lived in Phuket as well and while I am hesitant to call it a terrible place, I wouldn't want to live there again. It is corrupt, it is polluted, and what I hate the most is that is it a huge tourist trap. Everything in the city is geared towards extracting the most money possible from your pocket. It has very little to do with value.

As far as being a hair stylist, the only way you're going to be able to do so (legally) is to open your own shop. Anyone who tells you that you can rent a booth and work as a contractor or it's okay is LYING. Believe this because it's true. Hair cutting, hair dressing, or beautification are on the list of prohibited jobs for foreigners.

Phuket is cracking down on foreigners working illegally in Phuket and there are rules to live by in Thailand. One rule is to put yourself in the least compromising positions possible. Working as a hair stylist, or teacher, or whatever, without a work permit makes you ripe for the taking. Open a salon, if it's feasible, and do it by the book. Of course, this probably means paying the police and local mafia but...it's your call.

yes, hair stylist job is forbidden to foreigners, you cannot practice in public. I would suggest you to open a Hair Style school, where you will be the master telling here and there what to do to your employees, same as a chef in the kitchen! Actually if your school would be successful and you have good students, you could open a shop with your name on every main area of Phuket and offer to your best students to manage it. People will trust the brand name, and this island really need good hair stylists!
