I have a CD (without transcript) of teaching Vietnamese for foreigners. if u want, I will try to copy send to u by mp3 file. Vietnamese is not popular, that's y no Vietnamese post or upload lesson or video in Utube.

Thank you, but I'm not looking for anything that teaches the language - only conversations.

Thank you for the links.  The first one I've already seen.  The others aren't what I'm looking for as they're too advanced, but I'll keep the links to use when I have a better level.  The last one might be very good, so I'll check it out more.  The sound didn't load properly when I tried to listen to a story.

The video about pronouncing Nguyen was funny!

Beside videos and websites I posted, you can wacth many TV shows in Vietnam or many channels like HTV9,HTV7,VTV6...
In fact, some Vietnamese want to teach you Vietnamese for salary but some for making friends or practicing English. Sometimes they seem too enthused to make you worried but they have no bad intention. I just think so. If you are living in Vietnam, you can go to University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. The students there will help you,ofcourse, it's free.

Yes I know.  But I'm looking for SIMPLE conversations - not news.  I don't have the vocab yet for the news.  When I was in HCMC, I went to the 23/9 park where the university students go to practice their English.  Very inspiring!  Although you should know that the language of the future is Chinese.

Where are you now? If you are living in VN, try to speaking VNese by yourself will bring you more experience than learning from those websites, I think!

Hahahaha!!!  I love it!  There is no xenophobia in Viet Nam, and if you ask how to say it, they get scared that someone was rude to you!  God, so different from Mexico!

I know there are some Vietnamese people who don't like foreigners because of lack of understanding. Some Vietnamese people don't behave well. I am a VNmese,I can see it and its reasons. The reasons are almost from Vietnamese people. (there is some exception.hihi)
I think the xenophobia exists in everywhere. Some friends of mine are discriminated in US and other European countries. But besides, there are kind people too. I hope you will meet kind people in VN.
In fact, we like green eyes and white skin. That's really VNmese point of view. VNmese people think that green eyes look deeper than black eyes so eyes with green color are attractive.Those children ran away just cause you are strange and different from them. They are just kids.

Mark- I just went through all those links.  Some of them I've already visited (seasite is saved on my list to get to), one or two I hadn't seen.  But none (maybe seasite) give me what I want.  The hunt continues!

As for the kids running away from you... keep in mind that it comes from the family.  But it also depends on where you were.  Boondocks or city?  A few years ago when I visited my brother, his g/f's 2 kids completely ignored me, not even saying hello.  At age 5 & 6, somehow he and his g/f believed this to be acceptable behavior.  I saw it as not, and only as how they had been educated by their mother.  Everything comes from the parents.

I didn't mind the kids running away, because it was funny.  It's happened twice; once in the Mekong Delta and once in HCMC.  Both times the kids were toddlers.

I understand it's not exactly what you're looking for, but that FSI website is a gem.  The lessons are in the southern dialect, since the gov developed the program in the 60's/70's.

Vietnamese TV?   The soap operas they show have very good audio and the actors/actresses speak clearly.

"cua gai" is not a way to learn VNmese.

Im afraid I have to disagree - It is a great way to learn. Its about learing how to compliment a beatuful girl. How to be polite..etc, and its lots of fun at the same time. Quite harmless too. Please dont take offence...Im only adding to a free conversation topic - right? chill out.!

Yeah, but this is my conversation topic, and I have no idea what cua gai means. But I get the idea that it has something to do with the foreign men who want a submissive female who won't put them in their place and don't know better, who go to Viet Nam, search for a woman, then talk bad about her and all Vietnamese women behind their backs.  Take that stuff elsewhere.  Don't put it in my topic.

If you put this in Google > pimsleur vietnamese download <, they will be happy to give info!

I think I can help you to improve your Vietnamese

Look on here you can find some books with CD. But the most are in the Northern dialect. Only the course from FSI is in the Southern dialect.

Sorry, I haven't recieved any emails from this post indicating anyone had responded more.  I'll look at the latest links given.  No, I haven't found anything.  I'm currently using this page:    which does  help a lot, but once I finish those dialogs, I'll be left with...nothing?

Matt, yes, I'm a dudette, and if you want to use terms that people don't know in their own language, what do you expect?

learn Vietnamese as a habit. so I think it's best to practice it every day for a Vietnamese person
