Teach English with an online TESOL

GuestPoster847

Hello,

I have a question. I am wondering if I can teach English in Vietnam with an online TESOL certification. I have a Bachelors degree and experience teaching English in South Korea. I am wondering if when I come I will be able to find a job there or should I invest in a local TESL in class course? IF so do you have any recommendations? Thank you for any advice you may have.

Many will look at your classroom experience as a big factor in giving you employment. You will get work at laguage centres, but not at international schools.

Go for it. You will find lots of part-time work in Da Nang with an online TEFL. Join them up for maximum wages (though a little hectic at times).

If you need a full-time job, then maybe you will have to do a bit more searching. CELTA would be better.

Online TEFL is fine for most positions all over VN, do not worry.

If anyone tells you that jobs are hard to find in Da Nang... I sent out three emails and got 2 interviews and a part-time job offer.

It just takes a little time.

That sounds about right, based on what my friends are saying here in ฤร  Nแบตng.

However, that's not a glowing recommendation for the current job market here.

Maybe comment on these points to clarify the situation for job seekers outside the country:

1. Is that a legal job? Did it include a work permit and reporting of taxable income? Or was it paid in cash, under the table, so to speak?

The OP may need to be the sponsor for the visas of her husband and four children.

An illegal job gives her no pathway to a Temporary Resident Certificate or sponsorship for her family's visas.

2. Would you agree that the ฤร  Nแบตng market--especially in desirable living areas--is so flooded with traveler applicants right now that it's virtually impossible to get a long-distance guarantee for a full-time legal teaching job at a reputable school?

3. Are you speaking as a backpacker or as the parent of four children with a spouse, who maintained a household here while working part time?

Granted, the OP may not need full-time work, since her husband plans on supporting the family through his remote work from here, and (according to my trusted visa agent) there is no minimum requirement for number of hours of employment on a contract and work permit in order to apply for a Temporary Resident Certificate.

Still, if the job isn't legal...

4. Did your employer pay for your work permit up front? (Disregard if it was an illegal job)

I teach ESL online. I am also part of the hiring team. Currently I live in Costa Rica but will be moving to Da Nang later this year hopefully. Have you considered this option. The pay is probably better than at a school in Vietnam. Please let me know if you are interested and I can help you out.

I presume you are talking about teaching kids, yes the pay can be better online. Many people dont want to teach kids, therefore finding decent paid jobs teaching adults are hard to find online.
