Building a house in Vietnam (Any good contractor recommendations)

mith7

We have land here in HCM and it's been a nightmare trying to find a reputable experienced contractor that's actually built houses without lying about all their experience. Has anyone had any good real-world experience building a house here in Vietnam with a contractor that actually says what they are going to do?

Any recommendations or referrals would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I cant recomend anyone specific but I can say that in my adventures I learned a few things. We eventually settled on an apartment and rennovated it but spent almost a year looking at land to build a house.

  1. Start looking for architects, not just contractors. Im an architect in the US and we dont physically build anything. Design build is somewhat rare still and when you do see it the focus is on the builder or its just a builder that has a designer on the team. In Vietnam its flipped upside down in a good way. The architects typically have builders working for them. This is how it should be. They are much more hands on here as well.
  2. Find someone specific to your area. Specifically your ward. Ask neighbors. My wife and I origonally wanted land to build a house but my god the stress was outrageous. I was specifically looking in An Phu area and they had very specific zoning rules and restrictions that apply to that area. Because so much relies on government involvement you want a design team experienced with that specific jurisdiction and knows exactly who to talk to and what to do. Even now its all about who you know and what favors you can give. Thats the big part you dont hear about much.

Bonus note. Your going to want to be there every single day during construction. Just trust me on that.

Damn straight! EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Pay particular attention to plumbing and electrical.
