Traffic tickets

gainkeeper

I hope people on here aren't too cautious to give an honest answer.

My experience is that DR police look for any excuse to stop a gringo. I've been stopped several times for very minor infractions while 3 Dominican drivers drove on the wrong side of the street and 2 more ran a red light during the traffic stop.

Every single time they offer to accept a bribe to avoid my receiving a ticket. I have never once initiated the bribe conversation. Is their bribe price negotiable?

They don't seem to have a vehicle. They've been on foot every single time with no vehicle in sight. What would happen if I didn't stop when they waived their arms?

What type of vehicle do you have? We drive a car and have only been stopped here a couple of times, including once when the Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum movie was filming toward Barbacoa, and they wanted to confirm we weren't trying to find the location!

I'm not a resident. I rent whatever small car I can get from the airport.

I would think not stopping could be a very bad idea.

Yes bribes or tips are always negotiable. Always keep 500rd or 10 us in a specific location you can pull it out and say it's all you have

Yes paying a bribe is the norm. I pay $20.00 U.S. for speeding tickets on the Coral Hwy. I have owned a car down here for 6 years and never encountered a random pull over in La Romana. I guess there is a first time for everything.....

It all depends on the situation, I have been pulled over many times, Came to the DR  in 1994, lived 10 years, never had a Dominican license,, left,  then came back now retired here. they never bothered me for that, back then Saturday was payday for the police, no Amed, who are a joke. So depending on my mood I would give them something,or I would not. One time while in the capital a cop on a motorcycle stopped me and threatened me with taking  me to el palacio, I said let’s go, we drove around, he stopped about 2 times kept asking me where I’m from, I  said Santiago. When  he realized I wasn’t giving in to him he just gave up and sent me on my way. They are always looking for money. I’ve been stopped be rookie cops, and you can tell they are rookies, they don’t have a firearm, can’t be trusted, they need some seasoning before they are given a firearm. Those guys I just take a whole different attitude, they leave me alone.Bottom line it is a corrupt country so why should the police be any different

I have seen a lot of changes in the last 21 years, including the police.  They will continue to change, maybe not fast enough for some, too fast for others
