How to get Belgium ID card

_rosemary_

Hi! I'm struggling to find the process for getting my first Belgium ID card. I am planning to move from UK. Do I get it at my UK Belgian Embassy, or after I register at my local municipality in Belgium?

Thank you

Hi!

From my experience I had to get it at the municipality "Commune" after receiving an "Annexe".

I do think it's the same procedure for EU and non EU citizens

Good luck ;)

Unfortunately, you did not specify the purpose of your move to Belgium, so it is difficult to provide you with more specific information. The procedure for obtaining an ID (more precisely, a residence permit) depends on the reason for your relocation to Belgium and the type of visa you are entering with.

If you are a student, a family member of an EU/Belgian citizen, or a worker AND you have already applied for and been granted a long-term visa D, then your procedure will be as follows:

  1. After entering Belgium, within 15 days, you should go to your municipality (gemeente/commune) to register and obtain a foreigner number (rijksregisternummer). They will take your photo and give you a paper confirmation.
  2. The municipality will send a police officer to your address to verify that you actually live there.
  3. If you did not apply for the residence card during step 1, you will need to visit the gemeente/commune again to apply for the plastic residence permit card itself.
  4. You will receive your card’s PIN and PUK codes by mail within couple of weeks, indicating that your card is ready and waiting for you.
  5. With this letter, you go to the gemeente/commune to pick up your card.

However, if you do not fall into any of the above categories and did not apply for a visa D at the Belgian embassy in your country, the procedure will be entirely different. You will enter under a visa waiver (the UK has a visa waiver agreement with Belgium), and depending on your purpose, you will need to gather documents, submit them on your own, and wait at least 6 months for your application to be approved.
