American Marriage Certificate for Visa D

kyliejean13

Hello everyone,

I need my marriage certificate certified and translated to get my long-stay visa d. I read a few posts about getting marriage certificates apostilled before submittal, but I'm looking for advice on where to start. So do I contact the New York Marriage Bureau (where I was married) and get them to notarize it, ship it overseas to Belgium, and then pay for a French translation once I receive that new certificate?

I'm having trouble finding much detailed info about this, especially from America so if anyone knows the process please let me know!

Normally certificate should be apostilled in the country where  issued , legalized and translated in  the embassy of Belgium in issued country.

Make sure that certificate is not older than 6 months.

Good luck

For New York, this differs depending whether your marriage certificate was from New York City or a different town in New York State. If outside of New York City you need to get the marriage certificate from the county where your marriage took place. It then has to be notarized by that county and sent to New York State for apostille. Once you receive the original document with apostille you will need to get it translated in Belgium

If the marriage took place in New York City there could be other steps required. My wife recently got her birth certificate from New York City but it required another step - an Exemplification - and then notarization before getting the apostille from New York State. Please confirm the procedure by checking the NY Department of State website. There is a UPS store in New York City that can help you with this, but for a cost.
