B card request

VVAA

I have legally stayed in Belgium for more than 5 years now. It is due for my A card renewal.  Should I submit the request for single permit extension and submit extension documents for my dependants or I will automatically get a letter to receive B card ?

Are your working for all 5 year on local contract? If yes, you can apply for L card

But if you don't have enough time for expiry of your current card then apply for A card renewal, at least before 45 days and same time apply for L card or B card.

It's a bit complicated, the B-card you should apply for when you both cases are met:

  1. Completed 5 years already
  2. A-card is expired after completing the 5 years

Meaning, if your A-card is about to expire then you need to apply before it by 45 days, if it's the last card in the 5 years, then during the application (45 days prior the expiry date) you didn't complete the 5 years officially!

Then you need either:

  1. Apply for A-card again and send in the email to the City Hall that they should mention that you about to complete the 5 years and you should receive B-card if possible! (Not guaranteed)
  2. Or, you apply for A-card and at the same time you send another application for L-card (worked for me but lead time for L-card is 5 months waiting!)

Noting the following: (This is what I have been told in the city hall)

  1. L-card 5 years are calculated from the first registration at the city hall
  2. Nationality 5 years are calculated from the first card issuing date!

It's really no sense that they don't consider B-card application if you're applying prior A-card expiry (5 years completion) by 45 days!!

I didn't notice that you mentioned "more than 5 years".

If you already completed 5 years (without study years or including them as half years) then when you apply for the A-card renewal, choose from the drop down menu "B-card".

I think this will issue you the B-card directly as you passed the legal 5 years!
