Field mouse?

Kath948381

We or rather I saw a very small mouse with a long tail upstairs in our village house this morning and husband saw one downstairs close to the kitchen sink.  Maybe it was the same one. I don't think it's a house mouse as the food stuff upstairs hasn't been tapered with and unlike when we had house mice , which we managed to get rid of, there's no poo around. So although we've baited a trap which hasn't been touched, I'm thinking it's a field mouse which may have left via the  unrefurbished kitchen sink. Maybe the very hot weather got it to come inside  What do you think

There are many more species of mouse-like rodents here than you might think: living "close to nature" as we do, we were presented with many specimens by our moggies before they became indoor cats, thanks to neighbours who poison/shoot anything that moves.  We've had dormice, field mice, voles and even (wild) hamsters - along with snakes, slow worms, squirrels, and various birds.  We also used to get a regular procession of kamikaze birds - including large woodpeckers - wiping themselves out on the glass panels of our terrace  until we covered them with grey matting; it seems that Bulgarians of all species are reckless drivers.... 😎

Thank you Jimj so do you think the " field mouse" we both saw will have vacated our home now?

There was one in the bathroom in the early hours of the morning which I managed to kill and throw the body outside.

Then when I went outside and downstairs to make my breakfast I found another field mouse it he'd drowned in the washing up bowl. So I threw it's body outside as well where like the other one it was eaten by the outside kittens. So that's two bodies but I'm not daft enough to think the field mouse situation is over yet.

Well we've both just been to the village DIY store and bought sticky paper to trap the field mice in so we can get rid of them. As there was loads of stuff to get rid of these vermin behind the counter I'm assuming that it must be  field ad mouse season in the village. I'm glad we're not the only house in the village that's got this problem.

Well another body found this morning so fingers crossed the problem maybe sorted until next time. Four dead thankfully.

@Kath948381

It's always mouse & rat season in village houses Kath 😆, and therefore the stores will ALWAYS have a myriad of ways of disposing of them. Vigilance is key, and dealing promptly with them, before they get out of hand.

best thing is to keep 2 cats in the house and 4 outside🌹

The joys of living in the countryside, I never had a problem personally when I lived in the UK, as we always had cats. So did my grandparents on their farm, and my aunt on her 16th-century Grade II-listed building (smallholding).
