From my experience with muslims in Bulgaria, most are not considered radical. There are some devout and some less devout that I have met. There has been news of some extremists in the Pazhardjik area, but I have not followed the stories, so whether those claims were founded or not, I am unsure.

As far as working while you are in school, I believe a student visa allows you to work up to 10-20 hours a week, so part time. Anything beyond that and you would have to get a work permit, which, as I understand, is hard to do as a student.

Muslims aren't a single mind.
As with any group, they hold a wide variety of ideas as to how to live.
I'm sure there will be some extremists around, but there will be very few - The extremes of anything makes the news, the vast majority who live normal lives, never do.
