Car Hire prices

Bogart99

Coming out in about 3 weeks to test the water. Any advice on car hire as the prices vary wildly. Yes I know you generally get what you pay for but prices seem to vary amongst the Cyprus only companies as opposed to Europcar type outfits. Was amazed at how much they want for  GPS system Will be cheaper upgrading my UK one and bringing that out.

Don't need GPS - check your data with your mobile provider - I use O2 from UK and live in Cyprus as the deal I have includes data that covers maps etc

You can use maps without internet on your phone

maps.me

or download maps on your phone

Using Google Maps (Android & iOS):

Open the Google Maps app.

Tap your profile picture or initial.

Select "Offline maps."

Tap "Select your own map."

Adjust the map area to cover Cyprus.

Tap "Download."

Using Maps.me (iOS & Android):

Install and open the Maps.me app.

Search for Cyprus on the map.

Tap the "download" icon (or similar) for the map area.

Wait for the download to complete.

Lots of car rental options here.  We hire cars regularly and use Ride Now as we are still waiting for prudential to release our money to buy a car here.

AKis and Maria - akiscarhire@gmail.com 357 26938043. He will pick you up and isn't worried about age so if over 70 might be cheaper.

I just go on price as it doesn't matter much which company you use as long as their cars are not too old.

Next week I got a good deal online for  Elephant car hire through Discover cars booked through a uk website.  Watch out for extras.  We have coverage for car rental on a credit card but often have to give a big deposit instead.  When offered upgrade to a bigger car we have learnt not to accept as it usually costs more in the end..    Cheaper to rent from a car rental website than from the company itself!

Usually there is no problem here with cars when you arrive not like in the UK.  We booked a car in London through rental cars.com and when we went to Drivalia they said sorry we have run out of cars,.... but we have a booking.... no cars....   IF you are staying in a hotel in the area you might not need car hire for the whole time - bus from airport and then book for dates you want.

Just as a note ..there are lots of people who hire their own cars out for much cheaper than official car hirers ..am not saying you should or shouldn't use them just letting you know they are out there.

But beware that they are not licensed and not fully insured despite the owners assurances to renters that they are insured and as a result you could be at risk in a serious road accident ..

The choice is yours as is the risk and responsibility.

Not to mention that it would also be TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE! for either party to agree to engage in such a transaction.

@Drambuie

Absolutely

Some years ago I was going to do something similar however having looked into it and the costs involved in acquiring the appropriate government licencing and the proper insurances ..it didn't make any financial sense on a small scale
