Reading or Bristol ? or else ?

sergiogove

Ok ... let me just say it ... I'm moving to England !!!!  and I'm so excited :)

I'll be moving in early January. Right now I'm researching cities to shortlist a couple to go visit in October before taking the final decision on where to live and look for a job.

Let me tell you a bit about myself and what I want from England ... I'm a 27yr old guy from Malta and I work as a software developer, want to live in a city but I think London is too big/expensive, I'd preferably live in the city centre close to shopping and nightlife, need a city with good buses and other public transport so I could avoid buying a car for now unless i really need it, preferably a city with lots of stuff going on basically.

This is where I need your input ... I'm liking Reading and Bristol at the moment. Which do you think is best ? and do you know of any other cities which might do for me? Reading looks like it has more jobs, its closer to London, jobs pay more than Bristol but then I think is more expensive to live. Bristol looks nicer though but the jobs there pay less.

I still have to visit both cities before I decide ... but I would appreciate any input you might wish to give me. And if you have other cities in mind, please let me know. I looked at Liverpool but the IT industry doesn't seem to be much there. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks
sergio

Hi Sergio,

Well, you're right, being closer to a financial capital is going to bring you more, in terms of pay and so forth. But, I would recommend you give Bristol a fair chance. (I have to say, at this point, that I'm slightly biased toward Bristol :) ) There's a useful site here called knowhere.co.uk . It's kind of a crowd-sourced guide to the UK. It's a bit vague in places, but worth a look.  Are you set on living in the South though? Have you thought of places like Nottingham (aka Notts) and Leicester ?

Hey 1st

Never really thought of Notts or Leicester ... do you know if they are good cities in terms of IT jobs ? I'll look them up, as i'm open to anywhere really. I'm under the impression that the North will be more affordable but the weather may be more harsh ... am I right ?

Bristol is up there in my list so far and I also have friends there which might help me settle in. I was thinking I may even start there and then move closer to London eventually to tackle the big jobs.

The weather is a tinge colder, but don't let that put you off. Coming from Malta, i think you're going to find it a bit nippy wherever you go ;)

Have a look at this site; itjobswatch.co.uk. It analyses various job classifieds and gives you an idea of what is happening in an area, regarding IT skills demands. Here's an example for Bristol :D . Go ahead and try it for other areas. It may be a bit academic, but I think you should definitely have a look. You could get an idea of what's happening in any given area, regarding IT demand...

Here's another one linking to locations search.

I hope this helps? :)

Hey thanks that's a useful link ... i'll definitely have a look later on. Thanks for all your help.

I'll let you know what I decided ... it may help someone else.

Thanks again

Great mate,

Let me know how it goes :)

I live near Reading, and have lots of friends who live in and near the city itself, and am pretty impressed with it.  You can get ANYWHERE from there by train.  There are a good number of high-tech industries in the area (you said software developer...you got a resume posted??).  Reading's definitely worth a look.

sergiogove

Hey mzieg

Thanks for your input. I haven't taken Reading off my list. I'll be visiting both Bristol and Reading later on (most prob September or October) to decide which city is best for me and then I'll post a resume online and start looking for a job in the city I choose.

> "and then I'll post a resume online and start looking for a job"

You realize that by deliberately sequencing it like that, you completely miss the opportunity for a hungry employer to recruit you *before* you move, and offer to completely fund and orchestrate the relocation?  (It worked for me...)

sergiogove

Thanks for this mzieg

Maybe I didn't explain myself well. My intention is to actually move in January. I thought I'd start looking for jobs in October for the exact reason mentioned ... i might get lucky :)

By "then I'll post a resume online and start looking for a job", I mean that I would like to first decide on where I want to live so I could look for jobs in that area.

I thought it would be too soon to start looking now, since I'm only available in January (or maybe earliest November) ... what do you think ?

Thanks

MGC

No question....move to Bristol. I went to University in Reading and worked in Bristol. Bristol, is cool, has a great music scene, bars etc...plus they have lots of creative companies including Aardman Animations that did Wallace and Gromit animated movies. Good luck!
