Freelancing on a Family Reunion visa?

danyjr

Hi all,

I am moving to Germany in March 2024 on a Family Reunion visa while my my partner studies in Germany for a couple of years. I aim to work as a freelancer in Germany while providing engineering consulting services to non-EU (UK) companies or in some cases, the UK government. There will be no agents or intermediates in between me and the said companies. I have a couple of questions whom I would be thankful if you can answer:

  • Is it possible to work as a freelancer on a Family Reunion visa?
  • Do I have to charge non-EU companies VAT?

Thank you in advance!

HI,

You will just need to inform the foreign authority, whilst in Germany.

They will assist you.

I am in Germany, do give me a call.

If your FRV allows free access to the labour market (as most do), then you cn also work as freelancer.

However, being freelancer in Germany is made quite complicated by accountancy, taxation and social security rules. If you aren't well-versed in these regulations, you should consult professionals to set things up for you!

@beppi Thank you for your reply. I completely agree. The last thing I want to do is something illegal (even if unbeknownst to me) in a foreign country!

I am also happy to (and keen) to pay my taxes in full. Should we decide to stay in German indefinitely, I assume making tax contributions will help me with my case.
