Public transportation in Rome

Wrote this piece about the wonders of public transportation in the Eternal City, but I would really love to know expats' opinion on this matter...

For romans, going around the city on a bus or a metro is simply a nightmare, and this is why you can see every single roman family owning at least two cars. I guess this might seem absurd to a foreign eye...

In my believe still metro stations and walking is the best way to discover the culture of Italy
By the way, the metro crowd could be one of the traditional Italian life style which is nice to discover

For me travelling on public transport in Rome was very interesting. First of all, before riding the bus, I was intrigued as to where to find the ticket. While discussing the matter I was met with amused looks and eventually a couple of people approached me and suggested that I hop on the bus nevertheless!! Needless to say I rode the bus sans ticket. Inside, a traveler explained how it was a norm for people to ride without buying a ticket.
It was fun, though I do not endorse or recommend doing it! : )

PS. It was an inner city bus that I rode, no experience of intercity buses.
