Unemployment benefit query?

Not that I or my partner ever intend to claim, but as we are considering coming back to Malta I wondered if this would be an option if we had to? We are both hoping to find work quite quickly and we intend to come over with some savings but by the time we pay the deposit, rent, bits and pieces etc we will be cutting it fine. We have a 2 year old son so we need to be able to provide for him, so I wondered if it came down to the wire, can we claim unemployment benefit until we find work?

I read on this site that it may be possible to do this prior to leaving the UK and registering with the job centre in Malta within 7 days of arrival, but this post was back in 2011 and I can't seem to find any more up to date information. This would put my mind at ease if I at least knew we would have somewhere to turn if we were struggling to find work in the short term.

i suspect it is but it may have changed with recent changes on benefits

Hi, you can transfer your benefit if you are eligible in the UK. It basically means that your UK benefit will be paid here, after you obtained the so called "U" documents from UK. I copy here a part of a letter what I have received couple of month ago explaining the procedure ( I am in similar situation, I was on maternity leave at the time we have moved to Malta and was made redundant from my job, so I was entitled some benefits back home, which I wanted to receive in Malta)



Step 0 – You should consult the relevant social security office in your country with the purpose of obtaining ‘U’ documents (and gaining advice regarding liaising with Maltese counterparts).

In order to start registering for work kindly follow the below guidance.

Step 1 – Visit the Social Security Office in or associated with the locality where you will be living (you will be needing a fixed address in Malta) to generate a Maltese National Insurance Card (required in the registration process). If you give me an idea of the locality you will be living, I would be able to specify further.

Step 2 – Visit the ETC Registrations Unit in Valletta (And note that this information presumes that you will be residing in Malta, not Gozo) with the following documentation:

•    Your Maltese ID Card (Or EU Passport)
•    Your National Insurance (NI) Card
•    Your CV up to date
•    Your Qualifications
•    The Filled Registration Form (Which you may obtain & fill in on-site)

Step 3 – After you are registered, you may want to visit the International Relations Unit with these ‘U’ documents to help sort out liaising with the social security offices within your EU country.
