Moving to Malta

KatyAndrews

Hi everyone,

I and my husband are considering moving from the UK to live and work in Malta.

We have recently been on holiday there and feel that it would be a better quality of life than the UK.

We would like to sell our UK home and buy somewhere in Malta.

Is it possible to purchase a property or is renting first advisable?

Can a mortgage be obtained in Malta or the UK?

I would love to hear from any expats that have been in a similar situation.

My husband is a Head Chef and should find work over here easily enough (we hope). I am self-employed with my own recruitment agency however I am also happy to find some part-time work.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome to the Forum, it’s advisable to rent first to see whether you like living in either Malta or Gozo
and it’s easier then to choose an area to live, bearing in mind that building work is not as good as
the U.K.
With regards work getting a chefs position should not be a problem but wages are a lot lower here.
Good luck.

Hi
We have been in Malta for 5 years we came over from South Africa. We bought a property while we were on holiday and then moved here a few months later. My advice would be for you to rent first and then get a good feel of where you would like to live. We were offered a mortage however you are classed as a foreigner until you have lived here for more than 2 years and the loans are structured differently than if you are a local. We would suggest selling your property in the UK, invest it for a short term, live in Malta for awhile and then make your decision where you would like to buy. When you buy here there is a 1% tax to pay and 5% transfer fees.
Hope this helps, if there is any other advice you need let me know.
Kind regards
Astrid

Thankyou very much for the advice.

You say you bought straight away, any regrets in your purchase?

We bought a year after arriving. There is no way we would have bought where and what we did had we bought when we arrived.

We are very happy where we are and knowing what we know now I can guarantee we would have been unhappy had we bought what we thought we should when we first arrived.

So much variety in such a compact country you have a very wide range of choices. Don’t rush.

Re expat mortgage fwiw we got 20 % deposit at 2.2 for first 2 years then I think 3.1 after. I haven’t heard personally that it gets better after time.
