Expired Pre Brexit residency

martandgerry

Firstly thanks for letting me join your forum.

I am sure this is a tired old question, we have a pre brexit 5 year residency that has expired, as we had to move back to the UK to look after my MIL who has dementia.

We don't have an address in Portugal, and are now free to move back.

Can our old residency be renewed.

We are retired with very good pensions and about 400k.

If we can, what sort of accommodation would be required whilst house hunting that would be acceptable to the SEF folk.

Thanks for any guidance.

Hi @martandgerry,

Be aware that to apply for renewal you must possess a valid residence permit or one that has ben expired less than 6 months ago. If it's been expired for longer, I'm afraid you'll have to start the process from the beginning, with a D7 visa, etc...

@JohnnyPTOkydoky, it's a month out of date, but we are struggling to find an address, we are intending to buy in monsaraz area, but there is nothing to rent. We have been offered a piece of land where it's supposed to have an address, but we don't want to just buy anything.

We are in our camper at the mo, but camp sites are not recognised I think.

Check out further if campsites are acceptable or not, you may be presently surprised.

I knew a couple a few years back who used their motorhome address in a registered campsite location to register for their NIF and NHR and were successful in both. Around 2020.

Lost contact so do not have any further details but believe the account was both credible and truthful.

Good luck

Thanks for that, our problem is we don't want to turn up at the office, then be turned away as our address is not good enough.

Our orriginal paperwork was Albafura campsite, but not been there since.

As I said we have had to look after my wife's sick mother for the last 5 years and not really used or residency at all, it's been pretty sickening as that was our retirement plan to live near monsaraz, but was blown out of the water.

We are not sure how much we really benefit from our pre brexit temporary residency going forward, and whether the D7 route is just as good.

We were looking for someone just to give an address for a grand, we have got so desperate.

Sort of given up trying to get a address and in córdoba wondering if it's worth turning back.. Playing heavy on my mind.

I wouldn't worry too much

If you don't try, you don't get.

I'm sorting of in a similar position with an interview to allow my partner to join me on my residency (she is non UK, non EU) and we now have an interview on 05th April.

They took a year plus to arrange an interview then asked me for a list of quite illogical items (eg. Joint bank statements going back 7 years).  I refused outright to go to bother and cost to acquire these without guarantees. I offered alternatives but have no response whether acceptable or not.

I'm not overly concerned, TBH.

If the Visa isn't granted then we will just spend much less time in Portugal during the rest of my NHR period, then definitely not remain thereafter.

A lose-lose or a win-win , neither of which will be a major win or loss for myself or the Portugal economy over the longer term. ðŸ‘😄

I suggest you might want to do as I am planning to do.  Just turn up at interview with as much detail and background evidence as you are able to glean and be confident it is more than enough to get your papers.

Nothing in Portugal is black/white and sometimes it just depends upon the person you meet on the day and the mood they are in.

Best I can offer, sorry.

Thanks for all that..i guess your right, we may just book into the campsite for a month and see how it goes.

I hope it works out for you.. 👌

Hi. I'm very new to the forum and don't know how to private message. If you know how to pm me then I MIGHT have a solution. I'm best with email if that can be done?
