Hi everyone! My name is Matthew and I'm an undergraduate student at Tulane University in New Orleans graduating this May.聽 I'm really interested in getting my masters in environmental science or a related field, but want to avoid the cost associated with most American universities.聽 Since I already know Portuguese (mostly), and have always wanted to go to Europe, my search led me to Portugal!

Some of the basic questions I have are about student life, cost of living, average tuition costs, typical experience for a young American living in Porto--that kind of stuff.

As someone who's never even been to Europe, and doesn't know the first thing about the process of applying for a program in Porto, I wanted to extend the hand to you guys and see if anyone in this community could give me some pointers, fill me in on the basics, etc.聽 Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Hello.

I congratulate you on your sense of adventure.聽 But some more info is needed :

1]聽 What degree are you reading for at the moment at Tulane ?

2]聽 You say you 'know' Portuguese but at what level ?聽 Are your parents Portuguese origin and do you speak Portuguese at home ?
This is an important detail ( the extent of your knowledge of Portuguese, especially as you say you have never visited Portugal ) as unless you are really truly absolutely fluent in Portuguese you will have great difficulty following lectures / seminars in that language.

3]聽 Is there some particular reason you have decided upon Porto ?聽聽It is a good university,聽 by reputation, and certainly an interesting city to live in, but there are other University options which might be cheaper聽 ~ eg 脡vora, smaller, very beautiful,聽 probably an 'easier' place for a foreigner to integrate with other students in.聽聽
You need to check out the websites of the various possible Universities聽 ~聽 these are extensive, I know, both for 脡vora and Porto, and probably other places as well.聽聽Just search online and the sites will come up.

4]聽 What is important above all is to find a course which is well taught and which you would enjoy, ( this comes back to your knowledge of Portuguese ) and which would advance your career.聽聽.......... If you can find such a course in a 'liveable' city, such as 脡vora or Braga, I would suggest聽 think about there rather than a big city such as Porto which will be correspondingly more expensive.

5]聽 There is no doubt that the course fees聽 [ 'propina' in Portuguese ] will be a lot cheaper than in the States.聽 Also the cost of living.聽 The Universities usually post their Propinas on their websites聽 ~ but be sure to check the price for non ~EU students : it is usually more than for EU students,聽 but still聽 a lot聽 lot less than in the USA.

Please answer the above and then ask more detailed questions, when you have investigated the Univ websites and maybe found a post grad course which attracts you.
