Hi all,

I am a British Citizen living in the UK with a Romanian wife and 2x children born in the UK. We are seriously considering moving to Romania and I have joined this forum to try and gather more information on what will be required for me to move there.

I am a seafarer by profession and therefore I work away for around 6m of the year, my wife is a housewife/full time Mother.

We have a mortgage on a house in the UK and are in two minds whether to sell and buy in Romania or (probably more likely) rent in Romania for a year while we "test the water".

Can anyone suggest where to start?

I imagine speaking with a lawyer who specialises in immigration would be a sensible thing to do but I wonder if anyone on this forum has experiences to share of the do's and don'ts of immigration.

Hello Liam. I have dual Irish/British Nationality and have been living happily in Bra葯ov, Romania for two years now. I did all my research online, no lawyers required. A good starting point is the gov.uk site. Googling Move from UK to Romania will get you to the right place. If you nake the move, I would advise renting at first. Rent is generally cheaper here than in UK, so, off you are able to rent out your UK home, you should be fine.

Bra葯ov is a beautiful city, I visited a few years ago with me wife and her family and loved it, i am glad you are happy there.

I did have a look at the UK Government website and there is a lot of useful information there, thank you.

Did you just contact the Romanian consulate about your residency visa?

Also, as you said, the sensible plan would be to rent but have you any experience of trying to get a mortgage or any kind of money lending in Romania?

I have Irish citizenship so getting a residency certificate was really easy. Do you have any Irish relatives that would entitle you to a passport? I just want to the immigration office in Bra葯ov with the required documents and collected my certificate the next day! I have no experience of getting a mortgage but once you are "legal" it shouldn't be a problem.聽 I imagine you would need a Romanian back account although so far, I have managed with UK Revolut.聽 Bra葯ov is a great place to live and very family friendly.
