Amithkulkarni

Hi,

I just got an offer from a company based out of Muscat, Oman and they offered me RO 650/month salary + Family accommodation and Company car, Medical benefits. Just wanted to know if I can save good amount from my monthly salary? We generally have outside food over the weekends and eat home made food in week days. How is Vegetables cost there? How are the groceries cost? Could anyone help me with this information. I'm married and have a 1 and half old year daughter. Also how is the schooling fee?

Appreciate your help.

Hi there,

I have an offer with an fmcg company for 750 rial a month.  Travel, food,  housing is all on me. I just want to know if this offer is good enough and if I will be able to save some money?
Your reply will be of great help. Thanks. .

@ 650 or 750 rial u wont save anything at all, if you are alone or two member. it however depends on your standard in India.

Hi Sumitran,

Thank you so much for your reply :).

I would like to have some idea on few other things as well:

1. Geographically, how far is everything in muscat? I mean, whats the usuual travel people undertake for commuting between home, office, etc.?

2. How is the medical in Oman? Like, routine medicinal and doctor consultation charges, etc.? Any idea?

3. I heard somewhere that work timings in Oman are like this - 9.00 AM to 1.00 PM work, 1.00 PM to 4.00 PM off, 4.00 PM to 8.00 PM work. Is it true in general?

I wish to remain in touch with you through mail or other communication mode. My id is urvilkhakhar@gmail.com. If its ok to you, can you share your email id on my email?

Thanks for the valuable information that you provide.

Hi Urvil,

Some answers to your queries are as follows :

1. Compared to the Indian cities like Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, etc., Muscat is relatively small in size. Now massive road expansion works are underway almost all over the city. So traffic is slow. For your information, the main Muscat city on a stretch would be about approximately 50 kms in length and about 30 kms in width.

2. Medical services in Oman is anything but that. Here it is a purely commercial enterprise. Polyclinics operate like any other businesses. The sole objective is money making and not in providing service. º£½ÇÂÒÂ×riates are not allowed to avail of Government medical hospitals' services, unless referred to by the private hospitals for some strong and valid reasons. Providing Medical insurance to expatriate employees is mandatory as per the Omani Labour Laws. For dependents, if medical services are required, it is very expensive - both consultation and medicines.

3. It used to be what you are saying. But now most companies follow a 08: 00 a.m. - 05:00 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. - 05:30 p.m. routine with Thursday-Friday as weekends. Labour Laws state an 8-hour working day, with 2 day weekends as mandatory.

I have written in great length about work timings, medical facilities, details of Muscat city etc in my previous posts. Locate them and read for a clear understanding of what life in Muscat is all about.

Best wishes.

Mr. Lakshmi!
If you see the first message of this topic, you wont bother to reply back....  you'll get more than sufficient answers (Mostly from Mr. Sumitan) while you browse only this topic

Your second query - Yes, you change the job within Oman, provided if you get an NOC from your employer, however if this doesn't happen, you still can make an exit and come back to join the next employer.

Hi lakshmish,

If family accommodation is provided, then you could perhaps consider relocating to Muscat. For a small family it should be enough for modest living because your main expense (accommodation) is taken care of. The rest is up to you to spend, or save.

Shifting jobs for expatriates is very difficult given the employment visa issues involved such as clearance etc. Most companies do not give employees NOC, though some rare ones might. But you cannot bank on coming here and then shifting jobs.

Good luck !

Hi atcll,

With the furnished family accommodation most of your worries are taken care of ! Providing free medical for you and your family is a mandatory must give by your employer as per Omani Labour Laws. Car and petrol is good.

Getting admission for your child would be a huge problem. I can talk about that authoritatively  as I have been through it myself very recently. Demand is 10 times the supply. So getting school admissions is crazy here, lately.

And lastly, yes you should be able to save a decent sum from your monthly salary.

Good luck !

Dear Arun,

Dear Sumitran,

I am Arun from India ( Tamil Nadu)i got an offer from oman( Muscat) as an Sr.IT- executive. Please suggest below mentioned the points

1. I have send my medical fit report to the company 14 days back, how long time it will take to get employment 2 yrs visa. (Well, it all depends upon how big is ur company. Normaly, a well developed organization doesn't take more than 3- 4 weeks for obtaining the visa clearance. Your company may also call u at muscat on visit visa and later on converting it to the employment. Otherwise, it will also depend upon the ministry to get the work visa clearance).

2. I have been offered for 425 RO month. Company will provide accommodation & Transport (to &  fro)Me and my wife need to survive over there, Can i able to save something with is amount. (Considering the company taking responsibility for your accomodation, assuming they will pay for the electricity/water and gass bills as well along with the transport, its somehow a considerable salary. A minimum 150 to 200 Omani rials would be sufficient for both of you to live a primary life and you can still save atleast 150 OMR a month. Please note that Muscat is an expensive city and the cost of living here is pretty high).

3. Management said after 3 months i will add my wife in my visa, is it possible to get job for my wife in oman( Muscat). She is a lecturer. (Yes, it is very much possible to get a job for your wife. The demand of lecturers is pretty high in the colleges/universities in Oman).

Please suggest above mentioned the points.

Hello All,

I need some advice from the members of the forum. I have got an offer from one of the companies in Muscat which is a big conglomerate & my job profile is for Sourcing of Steel.

They have offered me a Gross Salary of 1050 Omani Riyal, which includes like furnished accommodation for family, light & other utilities bill, vehicle, Medical Insurance for myself & family & one time travel expenses for the entire family.

The interviewer told me that out of 1050, i would get net take home salary as 650 Omani Riyal. Now, if someone can help me to check whether is it a decent salary wherein i can have a decent lifestyle. We are a family of three.Myself, my wife & 6month old kid.

The interviewer told me that the max. expense in a month would be not more than 100 Omani Riyal in my case which will include food & other miscellaneous expenses

So, do i need to ask abit more with the company say around 800 Omani Riyal/ Month Net Take Home Salary or in case the recruiter says no to any hike then will it be a decent amount of 650 Omani Riyal to relocate.

srinirajan

1050 rials all inclusive for a family status offer is a low offer. Try to make that at least 2500 Rials. It also depends what are you earning in India and whether you are an engineer / MBA from a well known place. At 1050 Rials gross you will have a lower middle class Indian life.

srinirajan

100 rials supermarket billing - per month or per week ? Can you manage your all grocery, supermarket bills within Rs 14000 in a month in India ? The how will you manage that in Oman ?

Am a civil engineer fresher 21 years old .I got a campus placement  . The salary they are offering is 325 OR and 50 OR will be taken by the company each month and will be given back only after 2 years its like a bond. So i will be getting 275 OR in hand.,I just passed by B tech . Accommodation, transportation is provided by the company.

My question is not about savings .can I  survive with this salary so i gain some experience.

Hi Ajin,

For a B. Tech degree holder the amount quoted is on the lower side, albeit this is your first job.

To begin your career here in Muscat is not advisable as you would lose out on the wealth of experience that you would otherwise gain were you to learn your ropes in a dynamic and progressive country like India.

Ideally you should plan to work for at least 5 years in India so that you know and experience what real work is like. And then, if you want to you can always take up any Gulf job.

With some good experience behind you you will also be in a strong position to negotiate your package. Now you have no option but to take or leave what has been offered.

Think this through clearly; discuss with your peers; and then take a call.

Best of luck !

thank a lot for the reply.I am in a big confusion actually :( .But in India a fresher is likely to get 10000 to 15000 and also its really hard for a civil engineer fresher to get a job. Galfar is a reputed company and they will be giving paid training also. The salary will increase from second year is what they said.

Hi Ajin,

It is quite evident from you response that you have mentally decided on accepting the offer !

So I guess no further discussion is really required :) !

Wishing you all the very best.

schaz

Mr. Sumitran,
What i personally think is... that its the desire of being in Gulf (Specially for the young lads).... you're absolutely correct. Starting a career from Gulf is like destroying ur career in gaining experience, however it all depends on how a person thinks and decides a life for himself.  People who are more career oriented never takes a decision like this unless they r well experienced in their own fields. I have gone through the same time few years back when i was a fresh graduate and i do advice the same to all my juniors! but as they say... its all ur fate which takes u anywhere :)

Ajin

Thank u for your reply's but I think its a great privilege for me to start my career in a big reputed company like Galfar. I would like to work here for  years :)

Hi Friends,

I want to know the cost of living in Muscat Oman & on the basis of that what could be a good amount of salary in Omani riyals/USD.
One of my friend told me a package of USD 5000 per month is good to earn in which I can also save some money.

Please advise...!!

srinirajan

Sahazada, your friend is not far from truth ! If you are a family man with a school going child, you would need 2500 rials as all inclusive salary in muscat to have a comfortable life without cutting corners every now and then. 2500 rials per month will suffice.

Hi,

My name is Wasim, I am currently living in India, Pune city and working with MNC as Sr. Admin Assistant with annual package of Rs. 6.0 lacs p.a. (5 working days). My total work experience is 9 years.

I have got an offer from pharma company in Oman with 550 OMR (basic salary) + Free Batchelor accomodation + Free Food + Free Transport+Insurance. Company will offer me furnished family accomodation after considering my performance (not sure). Also what is the timeline to bring my family in oman after joining.

However, I want to know is it good package to move in Oman with family (after 6 months). I would like to take my family (spouse + 1 kid of 2.5 years)after 6 months.

Please help me with above query so I can take my decision.

HI,
please anybody suggest me, i got some doubts, i have got an offer , as a pharmacist in Muscat, salry 450 omani riyals, 6 month probation, bachelore accomadation free, 3 yrs contract, every 24 months flight tickets to home country.
based on this could u pls calculte how much i can save and how will be future abt any annual increments....? very confused about the offer., One more thing my present salry in India 35k i am a bachelore, how is the increment every year there in muscat...
ur earliest reply will help for my future arrangment
thanks, Satish

srinirajan

What's your qualification ? that's critical in detremining your salary growth. However, from your present 50 k per month to the Oman offer of 70 k per month is not a good growth and you may get stuck, as change opportunities are more wider and flexible in India and elsewhere than Oman. Being a family man ask for a family accomodation from 1st day and try and negotiate a base salary of 1000 rials + family acco. Else, the growth of 20 k per month vs. what more you will spend in Oman, you will become Nett-Negative.

shahzadhanif

Hi Srinirajan,

Thanks for the reply. Can you please elaborate how to make the most of this 5k USD p.m. in Muscat. I need to arrange accommodation+everything so would need a guideline  how I can work to save more.

Plus... any break-up of the the living & accommodation expenses would be great.

srinirajan

Hi ! if you want to be maintaining a upper-middle-class life in Oman, as a family man you wont save anything out of 5k usd p.m. you would just be managing well you and your family- no savings as such !

David

Hi schaz,

your post seem to be out of subject, can you please get back to the topic.

I am planning to shift my family (me & my wife) their, please suggest me whether this salary is good enough considering the normal living style at Oman?

Welcome to Oman!
If you've read thoroughly with all the replies by Mr. Sumitran, you must should (By now) be in a position to analyz your package.

OMR 550 (Subject to the availability of everything) is an OK salary for a couple to survive and save a bit, however with a child, im afraid that wont be sufficient
