Registering an Imported Vehicle

OL1

Hello all,

I am seeing if anyone knows or has been through the process of importing a vehicle into Saudi Arabia and how to go about registering the vehicle and getting KSA license plates put on.

I am importing my vehicle to Riyadh and have a company who will drop it off in Riyadh with all the customs papers however they are unable to help with the registering process and getting KSA license plates put on. Would anyone be able to advise what the process is and how much it may cost?

Thank you in advance,

O :)

@OL1 Did you have any luck with your query? I am in the process of moving to Riyadh and plan to drive my car from UAE to Riyadh. I saw some tidbits of information that  one has to pay 15% VAT on such import. Other places mention that if you don't sell you vehicle in KSA you don't have to incur such tax. Would appreciate to hear of your overall experience.

Hi both,

I just completed import of my car from Abu Dhabi, UAE to Riyadh, KSA.

I got my car transported through an agent, therefore not much aware about what happens at the port.

Otherwise, the process is simple both side:

In UAE,

- Visit the inspection center, pay about AED 100 and get your car inspected

- On successful inspection go to plate removing workshop and get your plate removed (you may give him some money, if you wish)

- Get your car export insurance (about AED 200-300). Insurance provider sits within the center. You will get 4-day insurance within which your car has to exit UAE.

- Now go to the RTO officer, submit your plates, pay about AED 100 and get your export certificate

- Go to number plate workshop and get the export number plate installed.

I did it at Al Salama center and all this services were is inside the center within 100m and was completed in less than a hour.

At port, you will be required to pay 5% custom duty on the total value of the car and 15% VAT again on the total value of your car. Collect your copy of Bayan.

Pls note your total import duty will be about 21% to 22% of your car value as determined at the port. I believe they use 20% depreciation rate per annum to ascertain the car value.

In Riyadh, once the car is delivered to your doorstep,

- visit Zakat, custom, and tax authority and get the custom card

- take the custom card and visit the inspection center and get your car inspected

- On successful inspection, take a car insurance

- take RTO appointment on ABSHER

- take all car documents - insurance, inspection copy, Bayan, your personal identity documents including KSA DL, and visit RTO office alongwith copy of your appointment

- Pay SAR 400 online and register your car, on successful opening of your KSA file, go down and collect your car KSA number plate

- Install number plates (no workshop here, individual guys who do it and charge SAR 20)

That's it, your car is good to be driven in KSA.

Hope it helps.

@RK1 Thank you @RK1 for a comprehensive response. Much appreciated. A couple of follow up, if you don't mind...

  1. How do they determine the current value of the car to apply 15% VAT? Is that based on your purchase price or based on the value of a similar new car depreciated 20%/year?
  2. Did you know before transporting the vehicle what the approximate customs plus VAT would be?

Thanks once again for a very helpful response.

RK1

Hi,

1) It's based on the car model and the year. In my opinion, the port officers have the rate list by each manufacturer, model, and year.

2) One can simply depreciate the car by 20% (my guess) and apply 21%-22% Dudy+VAT on it. For example, purchase value of my new car was SAR 104k, it is a 3-year old car, they determined the market value as SAR 45.9k, and applied 5% custom duty and 15% VAT on the agreegate value (MV+CD). Total duty paid by me was SAR 9.7k.

Hope it helps.

Thank you @RK1, your details response is very much helpful.

If you dont mind, can i ask your help to share the contact of the agent you used to get the car shipped and arrange the formalities.

In Saudi, after getting the car will the agent help to sort out the things for registration ?

jacktom

Hi @OL1

I am in exact same position you mentioned, got the agent but trying to figure out to get to complete Car registration.
