Hello everyone! Experienced ESL teacher with newbie Saudi questions

AnotherCanadian

Hi everyone,

Nice to meet you all.  I've perused the boards a bit and I hope no one minds me asking a few newbie questions.  Here is a bit about me:

I am Canadian and have lived in Dubai (3 years) and Shanghai (5 years).  I married my beautiful Chinese wife about 2 weeks ago and we are back in Canada for the summer now.  We had planned to go back to Dubai this fall, but have been toying with the idea of doing a year in KSA.  I've taught English at a number of universities in both Dubai and Shanghai (and other areas of China, too).  I was hoping to do the same in Saudi.

If any of you kind souls can spare a minute, here are a few questions I have about living and working in Saudi Arabia:

1 - Can anyone recommend a reputable ESL establishment?  I've been in the ESL game 8+ years and know how dirty it can be (luckily I've learned how to butt heads and get what I want).  A quality name drop from another ESL teacher would be highly appreciated.  I don't need to work at a uni, but I do need to work for a company that has some integrity.

2 - Do expat compounds have sizable Chinese communities?  My wife can speak English, but naturally she would like to have some friends she can speak her native tongue with.

3 - I see most ESL contracts include housing.  Does anyone have experience with what sort of 'housing' this is?  Of course, this will depend upon the school, but is housing within expat compounds usually pretty decent?  Photos make everything look pristine!

Thanks for any info you can provide.  When we arrive, first round's on me!  (At the juice bar, of course.)

I guess I should point out that we are probably thinking to go to Riyadh.  Open to other suggestions, though. :)

As a  male, you've got lots of options.  I would suggest looking into openings with Booze Allen Hamilton (and the like) who have contracts with the military.

As for a Chinese expat population, I personally don't know of many (which isn't to say there aren't any lol  just to say I personally don't know of many!).  Most Asians here are Filipinos.
