Hi, I'm Ross. I'm originally from Clare/Limerick. Moved to London in 1997 before Celtic Tiger. Then back again in 2008 as Tiger hit the skids. I am very interested in the prospect of moving to Toronto. I have some family there, a Bachelors degree in Computing(which I have never used) and eight years working on British railways. I like French although mine is pretty thin right now. I like beautiful scenery of which Canada has alot. And I am a huge MMA fan of which Canada also has alot. Ireland isn't what I expected and I don't see much of a future here. So I am so excited by the thought of moving to Canada and beginning a new chapter. Who knows, you only live once. Only problem is the criteria seems very high. I don't qualify as a Skilled applicant and I have only been self employed for a year here in Ireland. It seems to me the only way to move is to have a job offer before going. But saying that I also get the impression from a number of threads that people just moved there without much trouble or a job offer. I have a good education, I have enough money and I am a hard worker. Don't know what else I can do really. According to the points calculator I have 77 points and a pass is 35 points...I'm not sure but it doesn't seem to tally right. Any help is GREATLY appreciated, the clock is ticking. Hi Ross,

I moved to Canada years ago, and as far as I understand it the skilled worked program if u get the points then u can apply and will likely qualify.. time to qualify tends to depend on the office u apply from, as i believe there are quotas for different regions of the world.

When I went (even though i eventually got PR based on skilled program) I originally went on a young peoples 1 year visa. In the UK it was called BUNAC, as long as your under 35 I think u can use it, but again they have annual quotas. I bet u Ireland has a similar program..

I am 35, turning 36 in December. But I do have alot of experience under my belt. Granted not in what I qualified at, but I hope I could be ok. The age thing is a worry, but the highest points are for my age group, so who knows. Maybe I should contact their Embassy based in London. thankyou again for your help.

In that case, you options are pretty much apply for jobs and hope you can get sponsored (that's tricky - since the company needs to make a case that it would have been difficult filling the job from the local labour market) or apply thru the PR program, given the u have the points on paper, its pretty much a matter of waiting out the 6m.-1year that it normally takes and paying the fee.. Canada wants qualified people, thats its economic model, labour imports and it works well for them.
