J-1 Visa Caution

J-1 Visa Caution

The American J-1 Visa (Exchange Visitor Program) was established in 1961, creating the J-1 nonimmigrant visa category to facilitate educational, cultural, and professional exchanges between the United States and other countries, promoting mutual understanding.

It continues to be a very valid way to enter the United States when used properly by potential sponsors.

Unfortunately, as with just about every government program around the world, corruption and illegal sponsor tactics have made it necessary for foreigners to be extremely careful when committing themselves to a sponsor through a broker.

I'm sharing a couple of unlocked links to a recent series in the New York Times:

1. A fairly short summary of the reporting done by The Times on the subject:

2. A much longer extensive article focusing on some of the worst experiences:

Best of luck with your interest in visiting the USA.

Just please be very careful who you trust.

RED FLAG WARNING: If you have absolutely no special skills or education level and you are being offered a great opportunity, it's probably below minimum wage employment without any employment protections.

The J-1 Visa program is run by the State Department; not by the Department of Labor.
