How to Get "Idoso" ID in Brazil

Pablo888

March 4, 2025

As everyone knows, we are not getting older - just better....

One of the most attractive features of retiring in Brazil is how well "idosos" are treated.  Privileged parking, cutting to the front of the line, getting served first, etc....

Since I am approaching this golden milestone, I am definitely planning on dumping the AARP senior designation that has very few benefits to adopting the Brazil standard....

How do I apply for the "idoso" ID?  I mean here - the ID that I put on the car dashboard when parking in "idoso" spot etc....

I am already dropping the airline SkyPriority benefit as "idosos" board even earlier.

I know that @peter_itamaraca showed me such an "idoso" ID for PE.  Not sure if this ID is state, regional, or municipal ID.

Whatever it is, I want it....

Can people share how to apply for this very useful ID?  And where you get preferred treatment?  I am curious if free transportation comes with this privilege....

You need a GOV.BR login and then go to Senatran and look under "Usuário" in the left column, then "Credencial de Estacionamento." It'll produce a credential that you can get plasticized. It's a nation wide parking permit for those over 60.

This link might take you directly there (asking for your CPF and then your GOV.BR password):

@alan279, I did not buy a car yet.  I am just asking about the idoso card so that I can also use with rental cars or when I travel with friends.

I am just starting to spend more time on the island.  I will buy a car only if I spend at least half a year there.  Until then, I will continue to do rentals.  My current thought here is that unless I am full time in Brazil, I will not invest in a good car - hence my first purchase would be like a 5-10 year old beat-up that I can afford to leave unused for part of the year.

Did you get an update on the availability of the BYD cars?  Do those cars last in a sandy and salty sea environment?

alan279

A friend said he's seen a BYD in Ilhéus, but I havent seen one yet. BYD had some problems at their factory north of Salvador but planned to start assembling cars this year.

Salt air is very corrosive. I don't know which car brands (if any) are better near the sea.

@alan279, good question.  I guess that's why I plan to rent in the short term - to see whether owning is even worth it.  Uber is so cheap and convenient.

Although I like electric cars, I don't think that the electric premium is worth it in Brazil - not enough charging stations.

May be a hybrid car?

Two small details about the link for those with interest. 1) Your gov.br account must be silver level (obtained by using Brazilian bank account to login). 2) You must possess a Brazilian driver’s license to request the permit.

@mberigan  Thanks very much for posting.  I went through the process only to find that (at least as far as I could determine) you need a drivers license to get the permit from that link.  What about people who don't drive and get rides from friends to do errands such as shopping, etc.?

Sorry! Good points/question!

Up until this year I had been getting a municipal over-60 parking permit from our Superintendent of Traffic and Public Transportation. Maybe where you live something is available for your needs.
