Okay, see if I am reading this correctly;
He only has a CRNM.
He is not a Brazilian citizen.
Was the CRNM granted via marriage? Were separation/divorce papers filed in the same state of marriage?
I could not begin advising anyone on BR civil law.
Many of the º£½ÇÂÒÂ×s here have CRNM, RNE, work visas allowing residence until expiration. We can not be granted a BR passport until we apply for citizenship and pass all the regulations and language tests.  (Whole new topic)
1. I would say, he must apply for citizenship (unless born in BR.
2, Do not believe anything said online (even us) unless verified by an agency of the BR Gov.
3. Hire a marriage lawyer. Having to pay child support to one person and find out still married in the eyes of BR law to his wife, scares the heck out of me.
4. To obtain citizenship the government will do a total background check since arriving in Brazil

To the best of my knowledge, the very basis of having a passport, from any country, is evidence of citizenship within that country. To obtain a passport, from any country, you must first be a citizen of that country. Merely having Permanent Residency status, RNE, CRNM, etc. is not grounds to obtain a passport, you need to be a citizen of Brazil first.

Numerous countries do not allow dual citizenship for this very reason, Brazil does. I am originally from Iceland.  As a child, my family immigrated to the USA. When I became a US citizen, I had to denounce my Icelandic citizenship, giving up my passport from Iceland.
