A little help needed.

I will be arriving in Quito on Dec. 7. Could anyone recommend a good, helpful, safe and reasonable hotel to  stay in for the first, say, 3 nights?
This is my first time to Ecuador and I will be staying the whole winter. I will be looking for a home base, furnished house or apartment, to use the entire time, but not in Quito. I will also be needing reliable transportation to Cuenca upon leaving Quito and a place to stay there too.
I'm not sure what town I want my home base to be in, but that is negotiable as long as I am happy, secure and able to explore the country from it.
To start with, a hotel in Quito, transportation to and a place in Cuenca and nice trustworthy people will get me going.
Thank for any suggestions!
Roger

In Cuenca we used VillaNova (villanovacuenca.com/)  It is on the river.  You can sit out on the patio and see the river.  Downside is that it is at the bottom of stairs from Calle Larga.  There are other places - just that i have used that one.

When in Quito, I always stay in Otavalo Huasi in the Mariscal area. The staff are lovely, the rooms are bright and colourful and you feel like you are already experiencing Ecuadorian culture on your first night. And it's not that expensive either. otavalohuasi.com
