Cost of living can be extremely variable according to the place you live in (which would affect accomodation and food, for example) but most importantly depending on your lifestyle.
My husband and I live about 20 minutes away from Punta del Este, in a house we own ourselves. We don´t pay rent or mortgage, but we do pay a landscaping service for maintenance of 2.5 acres ($500/month) a pool maintenance service ($120/month) a cleaning woman who comes daily, 20 hrs a week (about $350/month including social security payments).
So household help is about $1,000 with a lot of help.
We have no children but we like to eat well and to shop at the most expensive supermarket. Our monthly bill is about $500 per month.
Our health insurance bill, at the best and most expensive insurer/hospital, is $214 per month total for both of us, including travel insurance, burial insurance and for my husband $500k worth of surgery insurance in the U.S.
We have a high electric bill because we run a sprinkler system for our very large yard, a pool filtering system, all the usual household appliances including hot water heating, and the heating of our home is entirely run on electric systems. So for us on average it´s US$240/month.
As far as going out for meals, we prefer to go out less often to better places. A typical dinner is usually between $30 and $50 each for us, at some of the pricey places, with wine, dessert, etc.
