Funny but true stories

Sandman6

Mrs Sand went for a dip in the pool yesterday afternoon and when I got back home from work, she complained that the water seemed really chemically and dried out her skin badly. She said she could only stand it for a couple of minutes, it was so bad. I checked the pool water, it was crystal clear but did smell quite strongly of chlorine.

I normally use one x 200g 5-in-1 pool tablet each week, placed near the filter suction and do this each Saturday.

Just as a check, I lifted the filter cover and noticed that there was a barely dissolved 5-in-1 tablet still there, even after 4 days. Hmmm.

I checked the tub of 5-in-1 tablets in the outside store and noticed that there were barely 10 tablets left, only 2 weeks after buying a brand new tub of 25 tablets!

Under questioning, our gate opener / pool cleaner / general yard gremlin confessed to using “2 or 3 tablets every few days, because I thought it was ok”.

We now have probably the cleanest (but most toxic) pool in TripoliÂ…

I was beginning to wonder why the hard-ass soldier ants which fall in the pool soon die off!

Moral of the story: Do not hire a yard boy who is capable of independent thought.

Hi Mr. Sandman!

My husband says we should try and bring pool chemicals from here (the States) when we ship our stuff next month, but the moving company says no to chemicals.  Any insight about availability/cost? He heard we shoudl expect to pay $200/mth for care taking of pool.

justice4pal

by the way, funny story, but scarey too. Clorine is nasty.

There's a swimming pool supplies store just down the road in Janzour, so no prob finding stuff.

Pool brush / 5m pole / suction tube kit approx: LYD 100

Tub of 25 x 200g 5-in-1 chemical tablets: LYD 120 (3 months supply)

Effort to keep the pool clean and frustration when some idiot screws it all up: Priceless ;)

eleanor

I would be grateful if you could tell me the name of the pool suppliers shop as we are planning to build a pool in soon.

Sandman6

After coming off the highway on the curving left-hand elevated section towards Janzour, carry on to the first set of lights, the pool shop is immediately on the left side of the road. It's called "2 something in Arabic". You can recognise the 2 bit at least.

There's also a small pool supplies store on Gargaresh Road, almost opposite the entrance to Regatta.

eleanor

Thank for the info.

Just had a bizarre experience with the local constabularyÂ…

Driving on the harbour road past Green Square, Plod in a Camry does all the flashing lights and “pull over” stuff (in Arabic). Me, being a law-abiding citizen, does as he asks and pulls over to the side of the road. I give him the car papers and my license and he starts having a right old rant – something to do with the license.

Anyway, he scuttles off to the patrol car with my papers and comes back a minute later having written me a ticket. WTF I ask myselfÂ….

After much scratching of my head as to what heinous crime IÂ’d committed, IÂ’m starting by to figure out that itÂ’s something to do with the photo on my license, which shows me with short hair. So, tugging at my flowing locks, IÂ’m desperately trying to explain in poor Arabish that itÂ’s me alright in the pic, even if it looks nowt like this hippy whoÂ’s sat in the car here.

Now the crunchÂ…

Plod writes “150” on the ticket and hands it back to me with the car docs. I somehow figure he’s looking for a little something so he can take his girlfriend/boyfriend to the movies.

After much horse trading (by which time the 150 had become 30), I just handed the papers back to him with a “no money, my friend and YOU are a complete tosser”. All with a big smile.

Another couple of minutes, and he hands the papers back to me with a “you bad English!”.

And off I drove, not a single Dinar having changed handsÂ…

Priceless!

Big clever man you are. Insulting a Libyan policeman's sexuality, verbally abusing him then bragging about it on an open web site, with your photo and a profile available to anyone. Real, real smart that. How stupid are you ?
I could find you myself in 5 minutes in Janzour if I wanted.

Clearly you haven't been in Libya long, some of your comments are ridiculous, You have much to learn but I don't think you will having read many of your posts. If you don't like it, go home. Problem is, you do like it but still want to complain. Remember where you are and respect the locals. You are a guest in Libya, remember that and you'll be fine.

Insulting police really isn't smart, anywhere in the world. And remember, most of the young people speak and read English rather well.

Here's a funny but true one for ya...

There once was a forum where expats could go to share experiences and information about their new locations.  All was well and all the expats were happy until one rainy day when the forum was inundated with nasty trolls.  The trolls would come onto the forum and use their small little brains to make useless comments in a lame attempt to somehow intimidate the original forum dwellers.  No one fed the trolls and they disappeared shortly after posting some subsequent solicitation of the expats' business such as an apartment for rent or an advertisement for a new troll store opening some time soon.  The expats lived happily ever after and the trolls died off due to starvation.  The end.

So let me get this straight.  You've been reading all the threads here. You have been in Libya longer than Sandman.

And, your first post on this forum is berating one of the few people providing useful info?  Maybe you could shed some light in some of the other threads here?

Horizontal Harry

Troll huh. You clearly have no idea where you are, what the rules are and how much trouble you can get into. I have been here for 25 years, I know how it works.

If you think it is acceptable to say to policemen "“no money, my friend and YOU are a complete tosser”, then you are a fool. Prisons here are nasty.

Anyway, the Canadian visa situation worsened today so you won't be around too long to call me a troll. I know a lot more about it than most, I wouldn't post what I do know on an open forum though.
See ya.

I do intend to assist where I can, when I have the time. People on here are so naive though.

Ah, there we have it. Been here 25 years and he thinks he's some sort of oracle...

Well Mr Know-all, how about you bring some of that knowledge to the table to share with others who are not quite so well informed? Or are you one of those who believe in the principle of "knowledge is power"? I've come across many like you on my travels and you are are indeed a sad species.

Horizontal Harry

Actually I'm not like that at all. Maybe I was a bit over the top but I couldn't believe what I was reading in your post.

I have only been lurking here for a few days, I will help where I can.

Sandman6

Thank you...

From what I heard, it depends who you're working for at this point...

Since you've been here for 25 years, and you list yourself as American it looks like you weathered "operation el dorado canyon" and everything that followed.  Based on this, I'm guessing you know not everything is black and white here.  Even if things are souring with Canada, it doesn't mean it's over...
