EDB retirement permit

Jl41

I have completed the process to the point of receiving an approval in principle and opened bank account.

Next step is to be in Mauritius at the end of the month to go to the Clinic in Grand Baie for medical and understand that it takes about 2 days and results must be uploaded to EDB to get an appointment interview- not sure at what stage the $1000 needs to be paid.

My only concern is how long it takes to get an appointment as this determines how long one needs to be in Mauritius for this - is there a way to expedite this?

Last, assuming it is approved, do you need to wait in Mauritius for the actual permit?

We have just received our appointment and it was four working days after we uploaded our final piece of information. In our case, there were a few public holidays in the way so I think the elapsed time was more like eight days.

Not sure about the two days for the medical tests, We went elsewhere and had to have stool samples and then had to wait for the lab work and final report.

@karibi thanks for the reply.

i take it that the final piece of information was the medical tests?

Do you pay the $1000 before the interview?

Assuming that there is no way of expediting appointment?

Last, do you need to be in Mauritius to collect your permit if approved?

karibi

In my case, no as I had the tests done on a previous visit. I just had to upload my visa stamp in my passport.

Yes, you pay the $1000 before the interview. You get the agreement in principle and then pay the $1000.

There is no way of expediting the appointment. I have my appointment on Friday. My understanding is that:

(a) The permit is issued on the same day

(b) However you then need to collect your ID card. This is approximately 5 days after you get your permit. If you have a dependent then I believe you can only apply for their ID card once you get yours. Thus I think there is a 10 working delay between issuing your permit and getting your ID card if you have a dependent. I believe you need to be on the island for your ID cards as they take biometrics. However, others should be able to give you a more informed response.

Hopefully, I will know more on Friday.

beatinusalzmann

Funny, we'll also be in Ebene on Friday. We hope it goes quickly then.

We had our appointment at the EDB today and didn't go as I expected. They were very busy and the whole process was very efficient. However, I didn't get the permit issued. This surprised me based on earlier comments.

I was told to come back 7 working days later to collect. At that point, I can then go to the passport office. It is not clear if I get my ID card then, or I have to wait another 5 working days. Does anybody know?

At the moment my timescales were:

4 working days after the submission of the last piece of information to get an appointment +

7 working days (hopefully) after the appointment to get the permit.

@karibi if my memory is correct. The visit in a few days after yiur face to face and presentation of documents for verification. Is when yiu get yiur ID card.

Have you transfered the funds yet and had the bank statement signed and stamped at the bank?

Not quite why yiu need to then fisit the passport office. If its a retired permit yiu dodnt get a new passport. Thata for citizenship.

Hi Chris,

I have had a problem with verifying my email address so I have not been able to log into expat.com for a while.  Hopefully it is all sorted now.

I am hoping to get some kind of clarity on the procedure.  I have just received my acceptance in principle.  So now I have to pay the $1,000.  I am not sure if I am able to open a bank account whilst in the UK but I will give it a go.  I have all the necessary paperwork.

I do not understand the â€upload a copy of my visa?  We do not need a visa to visit Mauritius.  Do they actually mean a photo of the tourist stamp in my passport on arrival?  Does this trigger the call forward for the face to face meeting 4 days later? Or do you have to complete something online to book an appointment?  You say you had your appointment 4 days after submitting your visa picture, but you did not receive the retired permit stamp.  You had to go back 7 working days later?  Please could you just spell out the whole procedure you went through and the timelines involved.

My wife (Karen) and myself arrive in Mauritius on Sunday 30th June and we depart on Monday 15th July.  (We are staying in the C Mauritius). My fear now is that we do not have enough time to complete the process.  (I would say that we have completed the medicals and I have my police background check.  All documents have already been uploaded into the EDB website).  It is the visa that baffles me a bit.  I think they mean tourist stamp.

Any help or guidance you are able to give would be a massive help.  Thank you and I hope it has all worked out ok for yourself.

@T?Wey

Hello. I think you have to be in Mauritius to open a bank account. The agreement in principle should allow you to do that, but the bank may want a local address! In addition they may want you to transfer some money into the account from abroad.

Somehow, I don't think 2 weeks will be enough for everything.

The stamp on your passport on arrival is needed, to confirm you are in Mauritius.

Please let me know how you got your bank statements verified. A direct message would be appreciated.

Best wishes.

@Tookays

Hi,

I went into Lloyds bank.  I explained what I needed.  The bank printed a recent statement and then verified it as a true copy with a bank stamp.

Tookays

@T?Wey

  Thank you. I shall try the same with my bank when the time comes.

You'll have to do some medicals here mandatorily. HiV, Hepatitis etc. Your presence here is therefore definitely required

ovtchae

Hello,

all should be explained in the EDB web page.

You go for the interview. You can go another time if you miss the scheduled date/time

You need to have your medical done locally.

You need a local account where to show USD 1500 transfer. BTW, recently this requirement hase been changed and you do not need to have a local account anymore. You may show them your overseas account. They want to see that you have incomes to support yourself.

For the yearly requirement of USD 18000 - you do not need to transfer to Mauritius, just show the incomes in whatever account you get them.

I was advised about this by the EDB officer when I was at the interview.

The interview is just to submit/verify the originals.

The Residency permit is issued at the end of the interview/verification process, immediately.

Then, after 7 days, you have to go to the PIO at Port Louise to get your local ID.

That was my process 6 months ago.

Tookays

@ovtchae Thank you for the updated information. I had heard that an overseas account with enough money was OK, and this needs a certified bank statement., which needs to be uploaded to the EDB application form.

A local bank account will be needed anyway, so getting one opened wil be a help especially to transfer in the money and for spending. Also, it will keep track of the money transferred into Mauritius annually and to apply for an extension after 3 years to make the total duration to 20 years (optional).

The new rules also mention that the approval in principle should allow you to open an account but the bank usually needs proof of a local address (in my case a copy of the rental agreement) and NCID/permit number; so I don't know how it works.

Meeting the EDB initially is a very good idea, they give you advice on what is needed and what to put in the application form.

It is good to know that the final interview with all the original documents leads to the permit being issued straight away. Sorry about my previous comment to Mike about waiting time for the permit.

Best wishes.

ovtchae

Hi,

The permit is for 10 years, not 3.

You do not need to transfer 18k per year to Mauritius. Transfer only what you need. But you need 18k as an income, which stays in overseas account.

ovtchae

@Tookays

the permit the EDB issues is for 10 years.

You pay USD 1000 fee for 10 years permit.

After 3 years you can apply for permanent resdency I think. Not 100% sure thogh.

Tookays

@ovtchae .  the initial permit is for 10 years, and you have to show transfer of at least 18K USD per year, rather than in a 'foreign' account per year after that. After 3 years, if you wish and have shown the money, you can get your permit extended to 20 years. That is what it says on the EDB website the last time  checked. It does not say anything about the money transferred in after the initial 3 years. The main change is that you can show your money in the account abroad as a certified bank statement at the time of initial application; I think because it is very difficult to open an account in Mauritius even with with the approval in principle. So if you have some savings and proof of regular income, you are welcome into Mauritus.

Also, just noticed one new thing in the budget which has not been highlighted --- previously you could not work with a retirement permit, but I think you had to have the permit changed to 'occupation' permit with its criteria. Now you do not have to change the permit. Whether it means you can take up a salaried position or not is not explained.

Regards

@Tookays

I was given 10 years permit in November, 2023.

@ovtchae

Can my spouse work in Mauritius after i got my retirement permit

Tookays

@davidanddavid2010

Your spouse will need to get an 'occupation' permit to work. The employer has to make the application on behalf of the worker. However, there was supposed to be a change in the regulations this year so that someone on the 'retirement' permit does not need to have an 'occupation' permit to work. This is not really clear as to how it would work out in real terms.

The requirements of the 'retirement' permit say that you cannot earn a salary in Mauritius. If you already have a 'retirement' permit, and your spouse is in Mauritius on the same permit, please check directly with the EDB -- and let us know! This change would help a lot of people who consider retiring to Mauritius and would like to bring their skills along to benefit the economy as well as to earn some money locally. It would also help local employers to reduce their paperwork if they wish to employ someone in that category.

Best wishes.

SafferCA

@davidanddavid2010

No, your spouse cannot work. She may own a business but she cannot pay herself a salary or take any benefits other than the dividends at year-end.

Tookays

@SafferCA

What happens if someone offers him/her a job?

SafferCA

@Tookays

They cannot work on a retirement permit.

davidanddavid2010

Thanks everyone for the reply . But if my wife is doing her personal business. There's no way  she will not get money from the business.

And again, can it possible to switch to occupational permit from retirement permit. And what are the requirements. Thanks

FWIW:

The government has changed after the elections of last  month and things may take a while to be established or the regulations may changed without explanations depending on the new ministers or may never happen.ðŸ˜

Tookays

@External

We have to wait and watch. Personally I think it is a pity that retirees are not allowed to earn some money from investing in a business or use their skills in other employment. It seems daft that people above the age of 50 should not work if they wish to! Mauritius is crying out for people with experience and skills in many sectors.

davidanddavid2010

Can i use my foreign certified statement of account to obtain my retirement permit as a prove of funds at the last day of interview to get my id

Tookays

@davidanddavid2010

According to the EDB website, certified statement of sufficient funds in your 'foreign' bank account should be OK.

davidanddavid2010

@Tookays

That means on the day of bringing my original document along with my certified statement of account is ok to obtain my 10 years permit. After that,I will go and open local bank account for the rest of monthly $1,500 per month for 3 years in other to apply for 20 years resident permit. Guys am i right? Thanks

Tookays

@davidanddavid2010

That is what some others have said they have done. Fingers crossed for you. Is there an upload option on the application portal?

Good luck.

Nmuhammad

This may sound crazy, but what is a certified statement? Does that mean I would need my bank to stamp the statement somehow, or do I need a notary to stamp the statement as a true copy? I hope it is not something I need to do in the USA as I left years ago. I've been living abroad since 2005 pretty much and have no intention of going back and visit.. I have been trying to find my place in the world. I am praying Mauritius is it.

SafferCA

@Nmuhammad Yes, you just need it certified as a copy of the original. You won't need to return to the US but you will need whoever certifies it to verify the authenticity by looking at the original online (Presuming you're printing a copy off from an online source).

Nmuhammad

@SafferCA

Thank you :)

davidanddavid2010

Hello guys,i have submitted my retirement permit application since November 1st,2024. still waiting for the outcome. Guys, how long the process takes to get your retirement permit. Thanks

Tookays

@davidanddavid2010

That is strange. Please log into your EDB account and check what is happening. Perhaps there is some documentation missing.

Where are you located? If you are already in Mauritus you could go to the office to check.

Best wishes.
