Shipping boxes to Mauritius

hypatia7

Hi all,

I'll be using an international moving company to send some boxes over to Mauritius.  Has anyone experienced any issues at customs or any security concerns when picking up at the depot?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi,

I often ship things here from China. The process is forwarder notify me when the vessel arrive, they will ask me for their fee. For 1CBM stuff, my forwarder charges me approx. Rs5,900 as local charges. Before shipment arrives, I need to find a custom broker to prepare a manifest in advance. Custom brokers here charge their fee per 11 kind of items (Don't ask me why 11, I guess some sort of their system). Once the vessel arrived on board, custom broker should have submitted the manifest to custom already. Then custom will ask you to pay the import tax/duty. They usually deduct directly from my bank account. If you are first time to ship things here, custom officer will ask your broker to make an appointment with you, at the port warehouse, they will ask you to open all the boxes for them to check if it matches the manifest. Once it is cleared, you may collect them immediately. I don't remember how many days are free for the custom warehouse. There were twice I had to pay the penalty. That charges is ridiculous. So a reliable custom broker is very important. But if you're ship through moving company, everything should be set, you just need to wait and pay.  Good luck!

Thank you so much for that detailed reply!  Yes I will be going through a dedicated moving company so the fees should all be well managed, it's good to know there are checks against the manifest.  It sounds like everything has gone pretty smoothly for you in the past, with the exception of some hefty-priced extended delays at the warehouse which is what I suspected.  Thanks again for your feedback!  All the best for your next delivery smile.png
