Hi there.. Not sure if this will help you.  We also Family of 4 also 2 boys from Cape Town doing the exact same thing. We looking at moving over in Jan/Feb next year.

I recently received my 1 year Premium VISA and busy applying for my Retirement VISA. On a Premium VISA you don't need to have a bank account in Mauritius or its not a requirement as far as I understand.  Having said that , we busy opening up a Bank account with ABSA Mauritius. ABSA Mauritius allows you to open a bank account on a Premium ViSA.

ABSA requires the following KYC documents  (some must be originally certified):

•            Latest utility bill not older than 3 months and a letter or bank statement reflecting your residential address
•            Proof of income – Salary slips for 3 months
•            Latest tax document reflecting income earned for the year (I am aware this is generated electronically – it may not be easy to have this certified please let me know)
•            Original Passport
•            3 months bank statements certified (we do accept electronically stamped statements)

We are with Momentum Medical AId. As far as I know all South African Medical Aids offer 90 days International medical cover, BUT you need to obtain a special letter from your Medical Aid to make it legit in Mauritius.

We are busy signing up with CIGNA GLOBAL to get an International Medical Travel Insurance policy. It works out cheaper than our Momentum Medical Aid and it covers 6 Months  South Africa cover while you planning to move over. .

When you land in Mauritius on a PM or Residency VISA you get 90 days of free import duties on a Container. Vehicles however has a 100% import fee. It is advisable to leave or sell Vehicles as it would be too expensive. I have a BMW R1200GSA Adventure motorcycle and busy trying to find ways to get my bike across.

Good Luck with your trip!

Hi Lemmy,

I would like to share my opinion on medical aid. Mostly Mauritius doesn’t have a medical aid system, but has medical insurance. So for example with Discovery you were covered with a savings portion (which you likely used for things like your GP visits, purchasing meds at Dis-Chem or clicks etc up to the maximum of your cap, then if you need specialized attention like a hospital stay or renewing your glasses that would come off your insured portion.) Local Mauritian medical cover works differently, you’ll have only the insurance portion and you’re insured only against specific events, and catastrophes that may need you to seek medical care outside the island. So you would mostly cover the greater portion of your day to day meds yourself and be covered for more specialized care things like hospitalization. Swan General is the largest provider for medical insurance in Mauritius, (pretty much the Discovery of the island), and you can get more details about the sort of cover they provide on their details or ask to speak to one of their sales teams.

Hope this has been helpful.

Sands

Question @infomclennan :

why the necessity for a Premium Visa in your case at all ?

Surely you can get Tourist Visa on arrival at airport (valid for 6 months) and then apply for Occupation Permit as Retired non-Citizen during that 6-month period ?
