What areas are good to live there?

David I visited Jogja a few years back as part of a train journey across Java from Jakarta. Stayed for about 5 nights at the Tentrem hotel (highly recommended) near the city centre. Frankly I was underwhelmed by the city although Indonesian nationals rate it very highly.聽 I came across very few expats while there but then I suppose I was in 'tourist' mode which is not the same as having my abode there. The main thoroughfare Malioboro st I found to be somewhat of a tourist trap as was the Borobudur Temple. Unfortunately I was there during school holidays so everything was packed out. I have never been one for crowds.
