American expat living in Thailand

richardlain

I'm an American expat living in Thailand and will hopefully be spending 6 months there and 6 months in Vietnam.

I'm happy to have found this forum as I have a few questions for the experts here.

Cheers, Richard

IMEO, you can only spend 3 months here.

OceanBeach92107, thanks for the heads up.

I wasn't sure that the e-visa company was telling me the truth that I could get a 90-day visa and leave the country before applying and getting a 2nd 90-day visa. My first 90-day visa starts 03 Feb. Guess it will be my last one.

Live and learn.

Welcome to the forum, richardlain.

The agency was telling you the truth.

What member OceanBeach92107  is saying is that you cannot spend an uninterrupted 6 months in VN.

richardlain

Aidan in HCMC, thanks for the clarification. Appreciate it.

Maybe adjust your plans.

Come here for three months and take a short vacation (10 days or more) in Laos or Cambodia or some other SEA destination.

Apply for your next NEW evisa for Vietnam as soon as you exit Vietnam.

If you apply on a Monday, you might receive an online approval by Friday.

All of this presumes that you aren't able to find a different visa agency who can get you a new visa for a simple visa border run.

That might be impossible by then, as more and more agents are reporting they won't accept an application for a new evisa while you are still in the country.

Good luck

OceanBeach92107, thanks for the reply. Yes the 180 days can be split up into two 90-day stays with a holiday in between.

Glad to hear that!

Are you hoping to stay in the same area for those 2 90-day stays, or are you interested in multiple locations?

A lot of folks can give you suggestions, if you want them.

One caution: You'll be arriving 8 days before Tết lunar New Year, and you can expect some disruptions in services, especially from the 10th thru the 12th.

Maybe talk with us about your first city choice and any lodging plans.

Forewarned is forearmed 😉

Cheers!

OceanBeach 92107, Thanks, I didn't see this message. I need to get used to how this forum notifies me.

Yes, for now the plan is to stay in or around DaNang for the first 90-days and maybe the same for the 2nd 90-day period.

I'm wanting to take a self-defense class there. I booked the first 30 days in I think it's called San San Hotel? The next 60 days, I'm not sure yet where in DaNang I'll be staying. Any suggestions?

I've never been to DaNang (except during the "American agressor war" 51 years ago) so it should all be a new experience.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tet lunar New Year, I was oblivious to its timing.

Cheers

Oh, on another note, I've been trying to search here on the forum to find out how and where to buy a "pocket wifi" so that I can access the internet securely with my laptop? I have a pocket wifi in Thailand and it has been working great.

If you could steer me to the right forum site that talks about it I would appreciate that.

Thanks

Cheers, richard

Go into your profile settings and you should easily find the adjustments for notifications where you can choose online or email or both.

My wife & I are in Äà Nẵng (I was first here in the early 70s).

Except for some Tết inconveniences, you are picking a good time to visit here.

The heavy monsoon rains have mostly passed and there should be a lot of sunny days in February, March & April.

That hotel should meet your basic needs, but if you want I can recommend an alternative through the private message system on this site.

Your two biggest challenges here during the first 7 days of Tết will be limited restaurants open as well as an increase in GRAB ride share rates due to fewer drivers being available.

However, the upside is that tourist crowds are much lighter so it's a nice time to do some sightseeing.

My wife & I will be happy to meet you for coffee and give you some local recommendations.

Cheers!

We'll be happy to help you find the right hotspot for your needs, though wifi is fairly ubiquitous in this town

richardlain

Ocean Beach 92107, Thank you very much.

I'd love to meet up with you and your wife for coffee.

We can talk then about your local recommendations for places to stay, since I've already booked and paid for the first 30 days in San San Hotel.

And also about where to buy a pocket wifi.

How do you do the private message system on this site? Where is it?

From the sounds of it, you too were in the military and you're also from California?

Cheers

@richardlain,

Hi Richard. I am no expert. I am an American, over 70 years old, who has lived 27 years in Asia including 2 years in Vietnam. I, too, rely heavily on the knowledgeable poster folk here. Good stuff.

Welcome to the Forum.

Fred

Click on the username

The PM option is on that page

richardlain

Lennerd, Thank you for the warm welcome.

This is starting to feel like a very good forum with great people.

I don't see that very often.

Thank you to all who have sent me a post!

richardlain

Fred, thanks for the response.

I must be a little slow these days. I clicked on the username and the categories are Activity log, º£½ÇÂÒÂ× experience, Pictures, Events, Ads, Karma, Subscriptions, Personal details, account settings, and Notification settings. I couldn't find the PM option.

To the left of the username up top, is the Bell and next to that is what looks like a message box. When I clicked on that , it says looks like you don't have any messages yet. I'm guessing that's the PM?

I think that I just need to read the Discover and Guide links before I ask anymore stupid questions and waiste forum members time.

Thanks again.

Cheers, Richard

richardlain

@Lennerd thanks very appreciated
